A listener writes “I’ve been listening to your podcast all week this week and as I was listening to episode 1150 I believe it was ,(the guy from Powell Butte). The episode got me thinking about a strange thing that happened to be when I was in 5th grade.
I was staying the weekend my with buddy, who at the time lived at the campground. It was the end of school, early 2000s. There was relatively no one at the campground yet. So we were having a sleep over and his parents were in the 5th wheel toward the front of the campground, we decided to set up a tent toward the back of the campground. Now to set up this camp ground it’s not far off of Hwy 97 in Culver, OR.
There’s just a few trees on the ground and behind the ground it’s a huge open field that butts up to an irrigation canal and beyond that is a treeless hill with some rock formation (this is important later…. I think), and next to the campground is a couple houses and barns with livestock. We sat up our tent and spent the night in the back of the campground with no one around, and throughout the night we kept hearing things rustling around the tent squirrels, raccoons, & chipmunks. We didn’t think anything of it. Now the next morning we got up relatively early and decided to go run around the back open field. It was an overcast cloudy day like it was about to rain. As we were playing we both noticed how quiet it was, which was weird being next to these homes with horses and cow, etc. We looked around and noticed not a single animal was out of their barns, not super weird just a little odd given the area.
So we decided to walk back to the canal and check it out. Now this canal had a dirt road that you could drive a small truck or ATV etc down it. We started walking along and we came to a spot on this road where it was wet. I mean soaked, which was odd. The closer we looked we noticed that on the side of this canal there were talks reeds/grass a long the bank and there were 2 impressions in the grass about 3+ ft apart, and as we looked more right across from those impressions were 2 more on the opposite bank. Now these canal have fast moving water through them and are usually waist deep depending on the area. Now back to the water marks. The only way to describe it is that it looked like something had walked through the water and into the road.
I thought it may be someone on an ATV running through there, but the ground was too wet that we would of heard someone driving around out there, and there were no signs of tracks. The water path made a half moon shape and went back into the canal, where there were 2 more sets of imprints on both banks. The whole track looked like something had walked through the canal out into the road and then back through to the canal.
Now these impressions were almost straight across from each other in the banks, if it would of been a person or the current would of been strong enough that the impressions would be offset, these weren’t. After about 10-15 minutes of just looking around we started to notice all the animals had started coming out of the barns and moving back out into their pasture. ( There were no signs of people to let them out, plus they had open barns.) We had binoculars with us so we looked around toward the hill up there and there was this one rock formation that resembled a cave entrance, now idk if it was a cave or just resembled it. The whole situation was just odd. I’m not really sure what cause the tracks and the impressions on the tall grass, but whatever it was had to be big and heavy to leave them. I’m not sure what to make of it, but I just thought I’d share it with you.”
