Strange Experience While Fishing

A listener writes “From the Uk so very limited to bigfoot but listen to your show daily! Wanted to drop you an email just to tell you about an experience I had around 15 years ago whilst out in BC, don’t know if it was bigfoot related but wanted to get your thoughts more than anything.

My dad and I are big fly fisherman and we vacation out to BC every year for a week or two, mainly sticking to the lower Squamish river chasing Coho and Chum salmon, we arrived this year to find that the days prior had been very very wet and the lower Squamish was a wash out – very very high and the colour of chocolate milk. We did what everything fishman does on a fishing holiday and went to the local fishing shop to get some advice on what / where we could go to find better conditions. The guys at Whistler Fly shop directed us up the valley following the 99 North towards Pemberton and then following Pemberton Portage road which followed a small river and train line further north. We found a spot to park next to the road at one side of a bridge that crossed the river, being young and keen and quickly tackled up and shot down through the under growth to get on the river….. very quickly I had a personal best bull trout from a deep pool just under the bridge and was super pumped to explore more. It was a lovely day – really warm September day with bright skies & no wind.

Once I had gone through the pool where I had the big bull I waded my way down and under the bridge fishing as I went, it was a gorgeous river full of lovely deep pockets so naturally I fished from one to the next slowly making my way down river….. at this point I should add that my family have been an outdoors family all my life, I was very comfortable being out in the woods and mountains and although not from the states or Canada we had vacationed there every year since I was kid so I was used to the noises of the forest and like I say comfortable being out there in the great outdoors.

As I continued to fish further and further down river I remember noticing when I finally looked up from the river and took in my surroundings that the forest around the river was denser and dark. I vividly remember noticing how there was not a sound – not a bird an insect NOTHING….. deathly silent! I was suddenly struck with this overwhelming sense that something wasn’t right and felt something was watching me and I should get out of there ASAP. It was something I have never experienced, it was this sudden built in urge to get the hell out of there – really hard to describe! It was like everything slowed down – heart pounding and the noise of the river flowing past me even sounded muffled…. Having waded down the river it was impossible for me to wade back up so my only option was the get out the river and trek back up through the forest and follow the river back up to the road. Not going to lie but the scariest face paced walk I have ever experienced, the whole way turning to look behind me with this feeling like I was being stalked…… once back to car I sat and waited for my dad and didn’t mention anything at the risk of him thinking I had lost my bottle….. ha ha.

Like I say nothing seen or even heard but that fear that overcame me literally from nowhere and that feeling of being the prey has stuck with me for all these years, since listening to your show and hearing witnesses mention about that over whelming fear and the feeling like they were being stalked has just got me thinking…. I have always been open to the idea of bigfoot but if I’m honest at the time it never crossed my mind and didn’t until recent years listening to your show.

What do you think? a Bc Squach watching me or just an British tourist losing his nerve….. I’d be interested to hear your views.”
