Strange Experience In Central Illinois

A listener writes “I have a couple situations I’ve experienced I thought might be of some interest to you. I live in Central Illinois for reference.

I had a very odd encounter about three years ago. My friend and I own about 500 acres of tillable ground, timber, and lakes. There are other large tracts of privately owned land all around us. I was fishing from the bank on one of the lakes in the late afternoon in the Spring. There is a huge stand of thick timber and undergrowth behind where I was fishing. We do have trails and food plots back there, but the timber itself is impenetrable. Well, all of the sudden I hear this loud burst of blood curdling scream come from out of nowhere from the timber. It sounded a few hundred yards away at least. It was unnerving but I kept fishing. About 2 minutes later, another scream, this time closer. Another couple minutes, another scream, closer yet. At this point, I begin thinking about an exit strategy. My truck is about 25-30 yards away and I am starting to think about how long it would take me if I needed to get to it in a hurry.

These screams kept happening every couple minutes getting closer each time for about 15 minutes. They had gotten so loud and close that near the end I was fully expecting something to break the tree line at any second. Just about the time I had packed up my fishing gear and was standing there waiting for something to emerge, the screams stopped completely. I didn’t hear any brush breaking, no footsteps, no anything besides these screams. In fact, those were all I heard. The birds, the bugs, everything else had gone completely and eerily quiet.

We have bobcats in the area, we have rabbits, there has even been reported a couple mountain lions. But these screams were nothing like that. They could only be described as primate/human-like, but just more powerful. The kind of power you can feel in your chest.

I told a couple guys about it and they all say it had to have been a bobcat, but I’ve heard bobcats, and this was just nothing like it.

About a month later I was talking to another guy who fishes the lakes in the area a lot and he told me about his encounter. He was leaving a lake about a year before my experience about a mile north of my property, again late afternoon. He was driving in his truck leaving the property and he told me he saw a Sasquatch on the edge of the cornfield pick up its baby, put it on its back, and walk right into the adjoining timber. I challenged him on it, and he looked me dead in the eye, as serious as you can get, and he swore on his deceased wife that’s what he saw and he is certain of it.

Now I am not going to purport outright that what I heard that day was a Sasquatch, but I know this, I’ve never heard anything like that before in my life. And I’ve never felt those feelings in my chest before. It was something big, and it was something powerful.

Also, about a month ago, my friend who owns the property with me and I were checking trail cams and changing batteries and one of the trail cameras was pulled off a tree. A couple strange things about this… it hadn’t just fallen off the tree because it was about 4-5 from the base of the tree, not right below it. It had recently snowed and there was no impact print at the base of the tree where it would have hit the ground if it had fallen and there was no snow on top of the camera on the ground, so this surely happened after the snowfall. The strap hadn’t broken or failed. It looked like something or someone had grabbed it and ripped the camera out of its hard plastic housing. There were no strange prints in the area. We saw deer sign and coyote sign but not signs of human prints besides our own. We also checked the footage and there was nothing on there out of the ordinary. There weren’t even pictures on the camera around the time the incident happened. Just some deer earlier that day and then boom, blurry pictures of what appears to be the grass and snow where it was lying.

I had one other strange thing happen this past Fall (around November 2021). I was out hiking with my two dogs in one of our usual spots. There were no cars at the trail head and no one around that I could see. I hike this trail about once per week, and it just felt weird that day. Something was off, and I just had some strange anxiety that I’ve never had while hiking.

I’m a big fan of Survivorman Bigfoot and Les Stroud and for some reason I remembered something he said during an episode… that some of his most activity had happened when he just put out the thought that “I am open to an experience today if you’d like to show yourself.” So I just decided to put that out there in my head. Not 90 seconds later I started hearing these light “whoops” from two separate ridge lines (I was down in a bowl and there were ridges on either side.) I heard probably about 6-7 back and forth. By this time I had stopped waking and was just listening. I then heard a huge amount of leaves rustling like something big was coming down the hillside. This was out of sight over the ridge so I couldn’t see it. I then heard some “chattering” like someone was talking but it didn’t sound like English or any discernible language.

My dog’s were frozen, where they would normally take after any rustling they hear any leaves or any noise (they love chasing critters.) they just kept looking back at forth at me and where the noise was coming from. I wanted to go further but I was a little scared that my dogs would run after whatever it was and I didn’t want anything to happen to them.

I looked at them and just motioned my head for them to follow me back where we came from. Now, they are good dogs but sometimes it takes a little coaxing to get them to come with me off leash. Well, as soon as I gave them the motion to go they bolted off in the direction we came from instantly as fast as they could. And we just made our way out of the woods calmly but briskly.

Now, it is possible this could have just been some people in the woods, but it didn’t quite sound like people, almost but not quite. It was also strange that I had that creepy feeling on a familiar trail and these noises happened right after I “opened myself up to an experience.” I can’t say what it was, but it was certainly pretty wild.

Thanks for taking the time to read.”

Thanks for sharing! I live in southern IN area…I’ve never encountered one, but I’m new to this world and my love for nature/hiking. I can’t explain it, but I love it. I’ve experienced the orbs, one was extremely large as compared to the others, and then some on the property of a friend of mine-there are areas of the property that are government protected bcoz of Native Americans. The land also happens to be close to a river…I can’t help but wonder if they’re out there? Thanks again for sharing your experiences – I believe you & seeing as how we live in neighboring states, I wanted to reach out…
