A listener writes “I have lived within miles of the Sam Houston National Forest for 39 years and I’ve seen things I still can’t explain or believe. One that bothers me ( that I can’t shake) was the discovery of a dead dog off lone star trail.
We hike the west side of lone star trail and one day I noticed something off the main trail on a small game trail under brush. It was a warm Texas day in September so this animal was fresh because no odor was noticable. I looked down and was shocked to see a large white Shepard dog covered up with what I would say was a crude “mini teepee”. The logs/ branches we’re about 2-3 ft long and some were too heavy for even a coyote to pick up ( I ruled out all animals since they couldn’t have propped the sticks like this).
The dead dog was in perfect condition except it’s back legs were twisted ( bone showing out hock area) and it’s intestines we’re neatly laying beside it. No other marks anywhere. I don’t believe a human did it and a car or atv wouldn’t have ran it over and just twisted back legs without injuring it in other areas. It was someone’s pet at one time because it had a faded bandana around it’s neck. Very sad and disturbing.
This always made me wonder why these branches we’re built over it and was the predator out there with me since im pretty sure it was a fresh kill.
I believe a bf researcher had been studying that area because buckets were hung with fishing wire high between two trees and random fruit were found laid out on downed trees way out in woods. Also I’ve had SO many weird occurrence out here, I’m sure it’s a good research spot.
If you would ever like to chat about my “incidents” please email me but thought that was a story you maybe interested in.”

Wtf no wild anmial I know does that. I find dead anmials all the time shed hunting for antlers. Heck I was hunting a great spot in illinois once during archery season. Hunted a stand one night till it got dark with no action. Came back at sunup to move the stand to another patch of woods. Pulled the stand and crept along the woods headed to the new patch. I saw something odd in the woods like 30 yards away. Well even when I got up to it I did not know what it was. It was a giant bodied dead buck with a bullet hole in the neck still dripping blood. It rack was cut off and both back straps were cut out of the deer. The person drug it in the woods and covered it up with leaves. It freaked me out as I know it was shot at night. I got my arse outta there.

I bet you did! That is awful! Was that during hunting season? I don’t know any hunters who would do anything like that. But then again, we’ve got some crazies near by (way too close for comfort, actually) who would shoot at dusk in close proximity to where I was building my house. I’d be packing up my tools and cleaning up for the day and there’d be gunshots VERY close by. It was really scary. I was working alone and eventually stopped rushing to finish and flee the scene and started shouting to the person to let them know I was there and assure them that i was certain they didn’t want to shoot me by ‘accident ‘. That would do it— the shots would stop until I was gone, but shockingly I had to do it more than once. It was close enough that had I been able to see, I’m certain I would’ve been able to see the shooter. Now, admittedly — I’m a Buddhist, so I’m a vegetarian and I don’t own or use guns. I live in the woods, my whole family own guns and/or hunts, and I have no issue with either. But the idea that someone would find it acceptable to shoot a military rifle after dark in the woods near homes is pretty disturbing. Several of us reported it to the police and we haven’t had it happen in a few years since.

I’d love to hear the stories, too. The sight of that dog would’ve been horrifying. I’m so sorry she’s living with that memory stuck in her brain.
