Shag Harbour UFO “Crash,” 1967

The Shag Harbor UFO incident is one of Canada’s most intriguing and well-documented unexplained events. It occurred on the night of October 4, 1967, near the small fishing village of Shag Harbor in Nova Scotia.

What Happened?

Around 11:20 PM, multiple residents witnessed a low-flying, brightly lit object descending from the sky and crashing into the waters of Shag Harbor. Witnesses reported hearing a whistling sound “like a bomb,” followed by a “whoosh,” and then a loud bang. The object was seen floating less than 1,000 feet offshore before it sank beneath the surface.

Immediate Response

Believing it to be a plane crash, local resident Laurie Wickens and his friends contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). RCMP officers, along with local fishermen and a Canadian Coast Guard cutter, conducted a search for survivors. They found no debris, bodies, or survivors, but did observe a large patch of yellow foam on the water’s surface.

Official Investigation

The Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax confirmed that no aircraft—civilian or military—were missing. The Canadian military, including the navy’s Fleet Diving Unit Atlantic, conducted an underwater search over several days but found no trace of the object. The incident was officially classified as a “UFO” in Canadian government documents.

I studied this case a few years ago probably on the History Channel first. One of the first documented cases of a USO. Ex President, Jimmy Carter (RIP) saw a USO back in the 1950s, I belive, as a Naval Officer.
