SC EP:295 The creature was hit by the police car

I am working on a great member show. I have several guests lined up and due to weather issues and power outages, I had to move some of them around. Sunday will be the show for members and I am moving the normal show to tonight. I really think you guys and gals will enjoy this encounter.

A listener writes “Hi Wes the above report is my experience with the Florida Skunk Ape. I’m a big fan of your show if you would be interested in interviewing me I’d love to come on.”

Here is the report: “In 1974 I was 12 yrs. old visiting my sister M and her family in Davie FL with my cousin A who was 15 at the time. One night we were sleeping on a pull out couch in the sitting room. When we smelled something like a skunk only worse, we asked my sister what it was she said it was the Skunk Ape and he comes around in the hottest summers. We didn’t believe her so we asked our friends and they said it was real.

One night while we were sleeping we seen a huge shadow come across the picture window. Then it turned looked at itself and let out a blood curdling scream that scared us half to death. Then it turned and walked to the side of the house and we followed it by going in the side bathroom. There it squatted down to eat a wild watermelon then it went to the back of the house to a man made lake, squatted down and drank some water. A few nights later the beast attacked a wild horse in its coral but the horse got away by jumping over the coral and ran off into the pasture.

The rancher came out and took a few shots at the beast but it got away. When the horse came back it had finger prints on its hind quarters, not scratches but finger marks. A few nights later the beast came back and killed a farmer’s bull. The farmer took a few shots at the beast but missed it. At the same time my sister and her husband J were coming home from a night out and the sheriff and his deputy were on patrol. We jumped into Joe’s car and followed the Deputy when the beast stepped out of the darkness and was hit by the police car.

The beast went down and when it got up it looked into the police car and let out a blood curdling yell. We were about 10ft behind the Deputy car when the beast hit the police car with both hands and the back of the car came off the ground. Then it limped off into the swamp. When the Sheriff got there the car looked like it hit a utility pole.

Just then the farmer came over and told the sheriff that his prized bull was dead. This bull was huge at least a ton with it head ripped off and thrown across the pasture. That’s when they called in the state police with their horses & dogs & helicopters, they searched the swamp all night but found nothing.”

Aw Wes, I am sure we all have a life hehe but I think there are a lot of us out there that use this show as a destressor. And they are very interesting and exciting besides. Thanks again for all that goes on behind the scenes to keep these shows coming!

Thank you Wes! I really enjoy the skunk ape encounters for some reason. I think they sound “ill tempered” like our Texas ones are, maybe that’s why, but there is something really spooky too about running into things like that in a swamp! I mean it brings back all the first old “creature in the black lagoon” movie stuff, that gave us nightmares or something. (lol – now you know I’m old)… Thank you and your guests especially for giving their time for our enjoyment and learning.

Holy crap…..this story is amazing……funny Davie is really close to Miami…..guess you don’t need to go to British Columbia to find a 9 footer…..just go to Miami!!!! Unbelievable…..the stream of storytelling is undeniable…..no way in Hell this guy is making this up….incredible. I bet the deputy is still alive….wish we could find out who he was….imagine his story from within the police cruiser…..thank God he didn’t touch the Lincoln ….probably a Mark III….Fantastic car. Great observation regarding it screaming at its own reflection….very possible…..but this guy was aggressive towards the local animals. Ripping a bulls head off!!!!???? W T F? Man these things are dangerous…..makes me really get upset at the flute players who are gonna get someone killed with their overconfidence and misguided optimism….

  4. Christian L

This is in the top 5 SQC encounters hands down…..and I’m still not buying the coyote audio….sounds much deeper with more of a scream or bark….not a howl or Yelp….I’ve heard plenty of coyotes….this audio was similar yes….but different in a very conspicuous way. I’m leaning towards BF or DM.

        Hey Rick,
No, the period in this case goes outside the quotation marks. It’s all a question of scope. The scope of the quotation marks is just the word “Brahma” while the scope of the period is the complete sentence so therefore it must go at the end of all the stuff in the sentence. However, if he had written something like:
John said “That bull was a Brahma.”
then a period would be required at the end of the sentence and being part of the utterance would come within the quotation marks as the quotation marks would be applying to the whole sentence of which the period is the completion! In the old days one would have required another period at the very end, but nowadays the period with the lesser scope is allowed to stand for both as it is not followed by any more words.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Before I moved to New York I lived in Davie so this was a fun episode to listen to. Before my Davie apartment I lived in Hollywood, FL and there was this preserve behind my unit that had monkeys in it and we’d hear them at night screaming. They were little monkeys like in Central America and I think they were let go but nevertheless it was weird to have monkeys in your back yard.

Isn’t it strange how purposeful this show is to each of us personally ? I’m in agreement with everyone who posted ^ about looking forward to these, but I got membership now, too, only to discover they’ve seen Yowies around here…in Australia. Thank you Wes & team. Thank you all very much xxxxoooo

(New Jersey) Was this the BEST show ever? Sure ranks up there !! Al was a Great guest! His encounter was amazing, and he was able to tell it in a way that made you feel you were there. I may be a little biased, as I’m from the Northeast, and my family also had a home in Florida. Anyway, just a Fantastic encounter and show!1 Al, you are the Best! Hope you return for another show soon!

  8. Steve L

Not to be rude but I have to say it. Why does is seem like so many stories are exactly alike? Its like one person tells a story and then 50 people after that seem to have an almost exact encounter. And Wes, I have heard you contridict yourself several times on various shows. Why is that?

    • m99

Contradict? Perhaps he’s not interested in editing out the conversation and allows it to roll…!? Why is that? Perhaps because he’s more interested in an organic approach? And, as far as the episodes being so similar, maybe that’s because Sasquatch has similar personality traits across the spectrum. I think this is the best interviewer and the best show out there. Don’t you?

    • WILLIAM P

This is an entertaining show for Knowers, Believers, or Skeptics. Common subject matter will have overlaps, that is normal. Wes appreciates direct talk, so be specific with him if you have concerns. He is always available. I myself will support him as long as he chooses to do this. The world needs more adventurers and less critics.

  9. Jack33

I can’t wrap my head around the idea of something being capible of ripping the head of a Brahma bull completely off. The amount of strengh that would take.

I don’t see how humans can co exsist with these monsters capible of such carnage lurking around their homes neighborhoods.

There were 4 civilians and two cops witness to the event.s that night, one of the police offices even hitting the creature with his cruiser! This would have been difficult to sweep under the rug had any one of them wanted to create a fuss about it.

If I was a homeowner in that neighborhood with a family, you’d better believe I’d have raised some hell with the local and state police, and I wouldn’t have eased up either until a military style kill team had come through there and eliminated the threat.

    Great show.

  10. June P

Al is an awesome guest. True seanachaí…! ( one who relates stories in Irish Gaelic) I was glued to the story!!! ( besides, you gotta love a NY accent!!)
Seriously, he told the story so well, with so much detail, that Wes did not have to intervene and ask for more specific details!!! Creepy, awesome encounters…
Bravo Al and bravo Wes! Great show!!!!

  11. Doug K

Hey Wes….I absolutely loved this particular show. It makes me think of a school teacher I had back in high school who one afternoon recounted a story he had about a friend of his and himself . They were apparently riding motorbikes together and the friend suddenly came up real fast from behind and said a big ape like creature was chasing him and it was keeping up with him. At the time I didn’t think much of it but now when I recall this story I realize that he was telling the truth.

  12. m99

_I’m w/ you! Caverns! Not a stretch of the imagination. We LOVED this account from Al. Thanks again “Al”! And_ “FS”, thanks for pointing that out. I could Not remember what that type bull was. Appreciate it, and that’s no bull. 🙂

  13. Kathleen T

Not a coyote. If you listen close enough you can tell that the first howl is open-mouthed. The scream/howl is not coming through a closed muzzle – like dogs and coyotes. To me, the sounds that were played – unknown source Vs. known coyote howls – were not alike at all. I say Sasquatch, clearly not coyote.
    LOVE the show.

  14. Kenneth M

This was a good episode – I kept on thinking of the film “Goodfellas” and Joe Pesci as the story teller. Mob Meets bigfoot – 74 Lincoln Town Car with sun roof & Cop Car versus Sasquatch. Needs to be a movie!

  15. Pete S

I was born and raised in south Florida (Ft. Lauderdale), still live down here today. I remember reading about this event in the early seventies, I was Bout 8-9 years old. My dad showed me an artical in the Fort Lauderdale News (now Sun-Sentinel). It was the first time I had ever heard the tearm Skunk Ape or even Bigfoot for that matter. THIS IS/WAS the story that introduced me to the subject and I have been hooked ever since. I used to work with a girl in the mid 90’s who used to live out near the everglades in west Broward County in the seventies who told me a story of when she saw the skunk ape, only this one was much taller than 9 ft.

      • Glen K

(New Jersey) Sheila, I’m no expert on Bigfoots ripping off a bulls head. Having said that, I would guess he broke his neck so quickly that the bull never knew what hit it!! It does sound rather gruesome, but I think the bull died quickly, with little or no suffering.

  16. Colleen C

I LOVE this episode!! I am a transplant from NY now living in FL, so this was an extra special encounter to hear! Like my own brother telling a story! Loved it! Thank you Wes for this amazing website & show. I don’t know how you do it!!

  17. michael r

WES………… please run the calls through audio-graphical software before calling them a male coyote. The calls were made towards and away from the recorder. I believe that you will fin the amplitude exceeds a coyote’s ability

  18. Danny G

    This was a great episode!
    Guest was fantastic and fun.
For those of us that spend 90% of our days in our cars– it’s unbeatable. All I listen to is this,Bigfoot outlaws, and books on tape (no squatch related)
P.s. No way in hell that howl is a coyote.
We have them thick here in Angeles national forest that surrounds my home.
I’m not sure what it was, but I’m not thinking coyote. 🙂

  19. Christian L

I think the ability to rip a bulls head off may have to do with the outrageous amount of torque a 9 Ft Bigfoot with probably a 6 foot arm span (conservative guess) could apply to the horns. If the big guy literally had, “the bull by the horns” then he had an incredible amount of leverage. I think he twisted its neck to the point of breaking it and then kept on twisting, like a huge wing-nut, a grisly thought. Something to ponder. Wrote entirely without ellipses. I Hope the editors approve this message. Gotta work on my comma usage next.

  20. Reid D

I love the guys from up north giving their encounters!! Love the story Al!! I love the way these fella’s explain their story!! Awesome job Al!! The south is full of mean ones brother!!

  21. Jan D

One of the most compelling things about Al’s story is that it involved a community. He really did a fine job of telling it as well. Though I have a hard time calling this or that one “best,” because some accounts are better than others for different reasons, there are certainly some that stick with you. This is one I will not forget. And one I’d recommend to anyone who doubts the existence of these creatures. Thanks to the listener who brought up the newspaper article to back it up.

  22. Jill F

Terrific show. Not exactly professional story-telling, but far better, we could hear and feel the excitement. Probably one of the very best. thank you both. Wes you’re star to do this so well for so long, we really appreciate it, thanks friend.

    • Jill F

Since I will be checked let me post this again,, correctly!

This was an amazing episode, so much to the story and so many details. The fact that even the alligators were afraid f the skunk apes was interesting. Also the openness of the community, everyone knowing about the creature/s being around, and the cops discussing it. The bull story is pretty terrifying,- I wonder if someone could do a Mythbusters experiment to ind out what sort of torque and power would be required to do that the a large bull. The skunk ape slamming his fists down on the police car’s bonnet, making the back wheels come off the road with the poor deputy sitting inside must have been quite something. Wow. I guess by now the police reports of all the incidents will have been purged from the files? Thanks for the episode Wes,and Al.

  24. MONTE M

Al is right alright and that is that Wes has a kick ass show and does a bang up job . A lot of people ( an understatement ) would call bullshit on Als tall tales here . Iam not discrediting Al – I believe his accounts . Iam saying these stories are so damn amazing, so over the top that if The Govt. told the truth and Al told these stories on mainstream tv like 60 minutes ,Oprah ,Ellen sHow ( sorry Wes) it still would not be accepted. So this massive monster who screwed , killed and ate anything it wanted to could have be-headed four of these kids riding dirt bike and fishing (like alligators and released pet Burmese Puthons weren’t enough) so instead let’s cover this crazy ass shit up and keep these kids and everyone else across the world safe and sound because we do not want pandemonium and widespread panic to blaze across the world like a wind driven wildfire . Instead just dumb it down and laugh it up and keep everyone knee deep in harms way .

  25. Blair D

Al was an incredible guest!!!! Listen to the episode 3 times…. was so blown away by the details and actions of this creature. Al you did amazing job of painting a vivid picture of where you where living, what you where doing at the time and what happened….. one of the best episodes ever……. right up there with bob Garrett!!!!

  26. John A

The bull that the man describes could have been a Brahman bull. They have short fuses and bad tempers. The Brahman or Brahma is a breed of zebu cattle that was first bred in United States from cattle breeds imported from India. Brahma cattle were produced by cross-breeding the Kankrej, Guzerat, Ongole, Gir and Krishna Valley breeds of cattle. They are a favorite of rodeo’s.

This was one of the first SC shows I found on YouTube about a year and a half ago. It’s one of the stories that have always stuck with me. It’s an amazing story and its well told. This episode is one of the reasons I’m a subscriber!

  28. Matthew J

Wow. Just listening to older episodes. That 1st story by Al: That skunkape may have been over 1200 pounds to do what it did! Ripping off the bull’s head has got to be one of the best strength displays I’ve yet heard. I’d like to address Al, the Deputy, the Rancher and his bull and all other witnesses: “You saw a bear. Period. You saw a bear.” LOL.

  29. Blanche D

Easily one of my faves. The guest was so funny despite the horrific beheading of the huge bull. His description of himself and cousin following sassy and the cop responding to his sergeant’s umbridge about not shooting the sassy was hilarious, I don’t know why Wes wasn’t laughing. If I hadn’t been lying down I’d have fell off me chair larfin! So interesting about the alligators not going in the turnaround and the one dozing in it. Just fantastic storytelling, I do hope he can be a guest again. Love that NY humour. Thank you.
