PORTLAND, Ore. — Pilot Joe Buley has seen objects moving across the night sky before, including satellites and shooting stars. But the bright orange light seen zipping above the Eugene area was clearly different.
“The biggest thing that stood out was it was changing direction. Usually, things don’t change directions unless it’s an aircraft,” Buley told KGW Thursday.
Oregon pilot puzzled by mysterious, bright lights in sky
At least four commercial pilots encountered mysterious lights darting through the skies above Oregon this past weekend.
“I’m just as curious as everybody else. I’d like to know what we saw,” Buley said.
The 37-year-old Life Flight pilot and two medics onboard the fixed wing aircraft reported seeing bright orange lights streaking across the sky on a flight from Aurora to North Bend.
“It’s weird. It’s red circular shape and it keeps zipping out towards the ocean and then coming back about 20 miles or closer to us, then it zips back to the ocean,” the Life Flight pilot told air traffic controllers on Sunday night in an audio clip posted online.
Air traffic control confirmed there was no military activity in the area. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) acknowledged that a pilot saw unidentified lights but did not provide further comment.
Buley said one of the lights was going in circles in a “corkscrew pattern” and showed up on his aircraft’s Traffic Collision Avoidance System.
“I saw a target that would stop right on that ring before it would go back out over the horizon, disappear out over the horizon off the ocean,” Buley explained. “ATC (air traffic control) said they couldn’t see it.”
Scientist and researcher Dr. Douglas Buettner and his colleagues believe the eye-catching lights may be reflection from Starlink satellites, launched by SpaceX to provide broadband internet.
Buley didn’t think it was a satellite because of the odd movement.
“They don’t change directions. If they do, not rapidly. Not at this rate of speed,” Buley said.”
