Earth is home to an incredible biodiversity; estimates vary, but it is thought our planet is host to anywhere between 8 million to a trillion species. The upper estimate would mean that, remarkably, there are more species on earth than there are thought to be stars in the Milky Way. Whilst some of nature’s creations have the briefest of life cycles – the Mayfly, for instance, lives a mere 24 hours – long enough to hopefully procreate before dying – other animals are blessed with a lifespan that endures multiple centuries. Here we look at 5 species that enjoy particularly longevity.
