Nighttime sighting of a white creature

2003, Lincoln County, Tennessee

My niece went out to roll the windows up on my daughters car when she heard someone hollering at her. She looked toward a field next to the house and seen something white standing there. It kept making the noise and spooked her so she ran back in the house to tell us. Shortly after this our dogs started barking. My daughters boyfriend took a flashlight out next to the fence to see if he could see anything.

He ran in the house to get the gun because he heard some movement. When he returned to the fence he shined the flashlight toward the woods again. What he saw stunned him for a few seconds. He said it was a huge white fury creature. He fired the gun and the creature stumbled and took off running.

While all this was taking place my daughter and niece were standing on the porch and witnessed the whole thing. They seen enough of the creature to describe it as being a huge, white furry creature on two feet instead of four. They also heard the low deep grunt my niece had already heard earlier. We all heard breaking of trees as it ran off. No one has been brave enough to go into the woods to see if we could find tracks or traces of hair.

I have no respect for anyone who shoots in the dark at something unknown and non-threatening. A firearm can protect you from an attack, but cannot protect you from your own fear.

If you are out in the country, on your own land and suspect something bad–shoot. I have every respect for someone who’s not a city boy willie who will go ahead and take charge. That photo has been on youtube for years. Good going.

Yes, Janetta, that photo has been on YouTube for years. ???? Wes pulls old photos and art work Thumbnails off Web to illustrate a Blog Post. It’s not intended to be taken as an actual photo of the Blog topic.

I live in the country and own my own guns. I will withhold judgement on this fellows decision to shoot until I know further details of the encounter. With that said when it comes to my property I would only shoot at one of these creatures to defend the lives of anyone on my property that is in danger of being hurt or killed by one of these critters. I would treat them like any of the wild life on my property. If they are not a nuisance I would leave them be but be cautious when heading out into the depths of the property. If they become a nuisance, destroy or steal any of my property, exhibit behavior that can be interpreted of causing bodily harm to anyone or any domesticated animals then they will be relocated or buried depending on the threat. I know that this becomes more difficult because they are obviously the most dangerous animal out their. I would have to change the approach of how I deal with them but up until that decision had to be made they would be treated like all other critters out there in the woods. Part of that strategy is calling on experts when the animal I need to deal with is one I am unfamiliar with, i.e. mountain lions. We don’t ever see them but we are in a corridor of travel where they pass through on occasion. If one stayed stalking on my property I would call in the experts to remove it or kill it, since I have had very little experience with them but if one was up by the house stalking night after night I would not hesitate to shoot it if I felt it was endangering my family and/or livestock. Just the reality of living in the country.

Well said Ted G & seems like if you shoot first, ask questions later you may not like the question. Hard to judge by what we are given as facts, creature moving torwards man aggressively?, of course justified to fire then. Standing there at safe distance and unable to posatively I.D.?, why shoot & do you have to live in certain place to make shooting anything you can’t id okay? I was taught that I must know my target & what’s down range & last resort for self defense.
