Navajo Rangers are well trained officers of the law but no amount of training could prepare them for some of the strangest reports of the unusual paranormal suspects they were to come across, such as ghosts, Bigfoot and UFOs, and they have also investigated sightings of creatures of Navajo lore, such as Skinwalkers who are believed to be witches that have learned to shape shift into animals.
John Dover and Stan Milford have taken paranormal reports from Navajo people very seriously. Together they managed a section called the Special Projects Unit. This special unit not only dealt with the typical day to day law enforcement investigations, it also was tasked to manage those investigations and cases on the fringe of reality, those cases deemed “paranormal.” They have investigated some very interesting cases, and in a few cases found physical evidence to back up the paranormal claims.

My father told us a couple of times when we were growing up a story about when he was 27 years old he was a supervisor at a uranium mill near Shiprock, NM. He worked the night shift and would travel from Farmington, NM 35 -40 miles to the Processing mill. One night he arrived and all of the Navajo employees were absent but all of their equipment was still running and sitting parked with doors open and such. He walked all through the site and found the same strange empty loaders and trucks without their operators. Finally, he entered a small building where he found all of the employees gathered and were extremely freaked out. They told him of a creature that he later would find out was called a skincrawler. Although my father was Anglo, he had long been friends with many Navajos and knew of the cultural beliefs and stories about the spirit world etc.
Several hours later he had to drive back into Shiprock and about 2 miles from the mill as he went down this gravel road something caught his eye off to the side. He described a part man part dog creature running on all fours about 30 feet from his car. This thing was keeping pace with his car up to 40 mph while running through sagebrush and arroyos. There was no mistaking what he saw and he never forgot it. This beast ran beside him for about a mile and then was gone as fast as it appeared. My father was a workaholic and a very serious person. It was difficult for him to tell the story as he did not believe in anything paranormal and that everything had a real world explanation. My opinion based on my fathers character and his serious nature is that these do exist and are more common than many people think.
