NASA Scientists: Something Massive Is About To Happen In Antarctica

Recently Antarctica has been in the news a lot and now scientists are warning us about an giant iceberg. Scientists have said that the iceberg in question could soon break off. Although this doesn’t sound like a big deal the iceberg in question is twice the size of New York City.

According to NASA scientists, cracks have been showing in the ice for the last few years. If this giant piece of ice did happen to break off it could potentially have big consequences. The researchers suggested that if this was to happen there could be a global flood, suggesting that many costal cities would be effected. The scientists are keeping a close eye on this particular piece of ice.

    I remember people spoke about this conspiracy about 10 years ago. They said most of the West Coast and East Coast would be under water. Kind of troubling hearing this now.

      I don’t think people will really do anything or try to overcome these climate change obstacles until the “last minute”. It’s such an out of sight-out of mind kind of issue (sadly). It doesn’t matter until it hits home and unfortunately it’s in the neighborhood.

      Forgive me Wes, but I’m 61 and have a BS in Environmental Science, and learned all about this back then. That’s the 1970’s. This is not new, we have seen it coming, and it is even more and faster than scientists had predicted. Humans have had their collective head in the sand, as we tend to do. It’s coming, hon, and we better wake up and pay attention.

        I have a MS in Environmental Science and a masters in Public Administration and I work in the field helping companies reduce their impact on climate chang. The science of climate change is unequivocal. It’s disturbing to see science skewed by politics. It’s not a liberal or a republican issue. It’s a humanity issue and the International Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations, and not to mention hundreds of universities are studying this. No, the studies are not funded by liberals. This is humanity’s biggest crisis.

          Thank you, Rosalyn b. For people who have not idea what they are talking about to be weighing in on this matter and calling this issue politically motivated is disturbing. Science is science, and science is not funded by liberals. Seriously, do you people think that liberals funded the discovery of penicillin, the polio vaccine, assays to detect e coli and listeria in our food system, new cancer drugs, tests to detect carcinogens in our soil, tests to detect carcinogenic substances in human tissue, and so on and so on? A good rule of thumb is not to try talking about something you know little about.

        Ok, another science lesson.
        Yes, ice cubes IN water won’t raise the level when they melt. But, put the ice cubes in a funnel above the glass, and as they melt the water level WILL rise. So, glaciers ON THE LAND, as they melt and flow into the ocean, WILL raise the sea level.

        This is why places like Greenland and Antarctica, where most of the glaciers are on the land, will add a huge amount of water to our oceans. These are where the many feet of water will come from.

      To begin with, this story claims dubious credentials – ‘NASA scientists have said’? Really? Who specifically said that, when, and in what context? Absolutely no specifics offered. But yes, NASA is indeed a proponent of global climate change because they, like many other research organizations, would love to receive big research dollars to study the climate issue ad infinitum. In spite of the undocumented claim that this Antarctic melting is well underway, there has been no documented evidence of rising sea levels anywhere, and the warning of the thousands of homes and the total property value at risk is blatant scare tactics. This is sensationalism at its worst and does little more than garner a few likes and subscriptions to a YouTube channnel. We’d be well advised not to lose any sleep over this simply because there is nothing to substantiate it and we could do nothing about it even if it were true. What would our first action be? No one has a clue save worrying about a natural atmospheric constituent like carbon dioxide. Pathetic and utterly phony. Just one NASA scientist’s opinion.

    There always seems to be some sort of “crisis” coming according to “science”.

    When I was in high school it was, “Prepare for the next ice age!!!”. Then came “Yikes!!!! Global Warming!!! Global Warming!!!” which transmogrified into “Yikes!!! Man-made Climate Change!!!”. Now it’s the prior + “IF this iceberg breaks off we is all gonna drown!!!”. Oh, I forgot, “There’s a big asteroid coming and there ain’t a gosh-darned thing we can do…looks like it’s gonna be a hit!!!” and “The next huge solar flare will send an EMP that will send us all back to the stone-age!”.

    As far as climate change goes, 5 ice ages have come and gone – we weren’t here to prevent them nor here to cause them to go away. Climate change happens all by itself…of course I could be wrong and the millions of farting buffalo, that used to roam here, coupled with the huge herds of farting ungulates of the African plains, could have caused the planet to be the hottest it ever was since the dinosaurs but we fixed that problem – at least farting buffalo-wise here.

    I tend to view these scientific panic attacks as just instruments to do more social engineering and gain more goobermintal control over people’s lives and finances. Carbon taxes. Really? Like a tax is really going to change anything but the lining of goobermint coffers?

    The ice cube melts in water talking point is flawed because the volume of the ice is already “in the glass”.

    Instead…take a glass and fill it to the very top with water. Now drop the ice cubes in the water. Will water be displaced and flow over the rim? Of course.

    Anarctica isn’t already “in the glass” so to speak. It’s outside of it just like any other continent.

        Let’s make America smart again! Geesh. Learn a little science. It will take you a long way towards understanding what climate change really is.

        Either that, or you can just make stuff up and pretend you know what you’re talking about, and not take responsibility for your actions.

    Let me see if I have this straight. A chunk of ice twice the size of NYC is going to break-off the Antarctic ice shelf. If it floats, rather than grounds itself in shallow water, it will displace the liquid water equal to its mass. Given that about 2/3 of an iceberg is under water, that would mean a volume of water equal to about 1 1/3 the area of NYC times the height of the iceberg. To be generous lets say the area of 1 1/3 NYC is 1500 sq km. The area of the earth’s oceans is about 360 million sq km. Lets estimate the height of the berg is 500 ft. If one doubles the surface area of the iceberg it would be necessary to cut the height in half to have a volume equal to the original volume. Following that pattern lets increase the surface of this new iceberg to 5.2 million sq km, the height of this sheet of ice would be 3 inches (even less when it melts). Given the surface are of the earth’s oceans to be 360 million sq km (way more than 5.2 million) I don’t see see how this most recent ice intrusion into the oceans would raise levels more than an inch.
    Did I miss something in the reading or is my reasoning wrong?
