Mountain Giant Question Answered:

Duke writes “This question was posted by Don Ray, a member @ Sasquatch Chronicles who asked about the Valley of the Headless Men and if there was any connection to Mountain Giants. At the time, I wasn’t sure, but more digging into this subject has brought out the following information! Michael H. Mason, in his book “The Arctic Forests” relates a tale he gathered while touring the area of the beliefs of the Takudh Kutchin Indians and their terror about the Mahoni (A.K.A. the Nahoni …..note that name…) who inhabit a specific locality, the mountainous region around the headwaters of the Porcupine and Peel river and sometimes as far west as Kandik creek. This country is resolutely avoided by the Indians. According to them, the Mahoni are terrible wildmen with red eyes, and of enormous height, completely covered in long hair. They live without fire and whenever possible, eat human flesh. They leave man-like footprints up to 3 feet long and will eat a whole birch tree, torn up by the roots, only throwing away the twigs…..Birch trees, oddly enough, get mentioned again in another account, that of Russell Annabel and his youth in Alaska (1940’s) where he recounts an entire summer spent on the Nelchina Plateau with hunter Tex Cobb.

They met with a group of local natives who, along with their Chief, Stickman, had told them much lore about the GILYUK – The-Big-man with-the-little-hat, a reference apparently to it’s sagittal crest which gives it’s head a pointy shape and also a point for the massive muscles that power the bone-crushing lower jaw to anchor to. The Indians were terrified of GILYUK because “He was a shaggy giant who wore a little hat and ate men”. As evidence of his presence, they showed the 2 men a recently twisted birch sapling, 4 inches thick and 10 feet tall, which had been twisted and destroyed and was then in the process of wilting. The following night Chief Stickman left his camp to go a short ways to a nearby lake when he vanished, never to be seen again. All that was found was a torn garment, the one he had been wearing……the Indians swiftly departed the area! Lt. W.R. Abercrombie when reporting on an expedition to the Copper river Valley in Alaska, reported in 1884 that ” Like the Yakutat and Chilkat, Kolosh and the Ugalentsi, the locals entertain some curious ideas respecting the tribes living far in the interior of the country.

Thus the Kenaitze have a tradition that not over 200 years ago, the mountains to the north were inhabited by a race of Giants who occasionally would raid nearby villages, and whose strength and size were such that any unfortunate Kenaitze who fell into the grasp of these monsters would be seized by the feet and killed by having their heads smashed in…” More recently, from B.C., comes the report of 2 prospectors, the Welch brothers (June,1965) who watched one of these behemoths for the better part of an hour, noticing remarkable details like it’s Canoe-paddle sized yellow hands and Auburn hair. They estimated it’s height by measuring trees it had moved past (it was estimated at 12′ tall) and also found several 4-toed tracks over 20″ long where it had walked! There are plenty of report like this which have come out of B.C. and Alaska over the years which point to Mountain Giants as the suspects……”

Duke, ????, Thanks for the info. The problem is that these Mountain Giants are as interesting as the Bigfoots themselves. In other words, I can’t get enough of either one. You turned us on to the Mountain Giants and it seems there is not the info on them like you would fine with Bigfoot. What ever you can educate us on with the subject is so appreciated. Maybe you can come back on with a show just on the fellas called Mountain Giants?? It would be great! Wes, my man, what do you think buddy?? ????????????????(two thumbs up)

I live here in Alaska and have relatives in some of the areas that you mention. In Yakutat I spent a week there all over the very near pristine Situk river drainage and found no evidence of any mountain giants, or Sasquatch and we were looking for any sign of bears the whole trip also found none. Have also made many trips to the Copper river and have explored it as time has permitted but this is an extremely rugged area, and can be very dangerous place. I don’t dismiss that Sasquatch, or a mountain giant has not trekked these areas in the past. But personally have not seen evidence of them. I have friends and family living near Border Alaska, some of them being Athabaskan native. After a long day of fishing under the midnight sun, I listened to a story that was told by my brother in law and confirmed by several others, of a remote place that is foreboding with good hunting, fishing and large quantities of gold that lay a bout on the surface. local natives also avoid and venture not in to this land. The bad part of this story goes something like this; those who venture in to this area are meet by fierce guardian warriors that exact there demise for there trespass! I have never forgotten that story. This is vast area and resembles some of the Nahonni Valley topography if you found yourself in such an area that held a number of these mountain giants nomadic,or indigenous, your ability to return yourself to civilization I believe would be futile at best. as the story was told those who go in do not come out.
