Mike used to have a website and forum called Kiamichi Giants but I haven’t been there is so long…well heck, I’ll just check and see if it’s still there!
And yep, it is. You do have to register for membership to see anything.
The guys did tell the story, way back after it happened, but they took so much crap over it from so many people, that after initially fighting back, they pretty much just shut up about it. I know Mike personally as well and have camped out on his property and whatever happened, he is sincere about his version of the story.
Oh yeah, that’s an oldie! I had the pleasure of hearing Tom Steenburg recount the story years ago. He’s a great speaker. 🙂

One of the guys in my little group had the back of his house hit so hard by something several years ago, that decorative plates hanging on the wall fell off. It’s in an area where he had a “probably” encounter 15-20 years ago.
My tent’s been smacked, and an outbuilding on the property, a couple hundred yards from where we camp, got smacked HARD during a long middle-of-the-night event 3 years ago. One of our guys keeps a small camper on the property and we’re all just waiting for the night when that thing gets smacked and gives him a heart attack. 😀
Oddly, our land owner, while he gets vocals on a regular basis within about 150 yards of his house, has never had any indication at all that they’ve come up close. Go figure.
If you’ve ever shared this anywhere else in the past Randy, I must have missed it ’cause I don’t remember hearing this before. Thanks for posting it! 🙂
Agreed!! There are a ton of really good people in the BFRO, and no other available database rivals that one.
When I left, I did copy and paste a few uninvestigated reports to my computer (bad girl! lol), just in case….just in case *what*, I wasn’t sure, but just felt like I should. That computer died on me a few years ago and those reports died with it, but I can tell you they were all just your garden-variety reports, nothing different or unusual about any of them. 🙂
I used to be one of them. 🙂 …. everything that gets “investigated” (which, at least at that time, meant a ten-minute phone interview with one of the very few members who actually did any work, probably several states away) and found to be not absolute crap gets published. There is no “they”…the BFRO is Matt Moneymaker, period, and those who serve him. There are no group meetings, group decisions, no hierarchy, etc…members just log into the database, get rid of the obvious hoaxes, and decide which reports to pick up and check out. I know things have changed and Matt’s let people buy their way into being investigators (via paid expeditions) and there are a lot more of them now, so I’d assume the backlog isn’t quite as big, but who knows. It’s a good place (probably really the only place) to start if someone’s figuring out an area to look at. 🙂 But anyway, it’s not like a big private club at all…it’s really just not a big deal! LOL
And you’re right, a lot of people who know about the BFRO avoid it, BUT that’s people within the community (I hate that term but what else is there??) … average Joe out on the river or up in his tree stand has never heard of it to deliberately avoid it, but it’s one of the first things he’s gonna run into IF he goes looking on the internet after an encounter. Even then, is he going to leave a report? I really do think the unreported number is vastly higher than the reported.

Regarding hunting, all I can say firsthand is that our area gets very quiet as soon as bow season starts (we have had spotty activity here and there through early November), but as soon as gun season starts, it goes dead until early Spring.
Michigan has a rich history from the southwest quadrant of the lower peninsula, but most reported encounters have been from midline north. I think your number is VERY low and that for every encounter that’s made public, there are at least 50, probably more like 100, that are never taken to any internet site, and I base that on both talking with other people in the area of the property we work, and completely random strangers relating experiences in the area to my husband (while he’s been working) and to one of our other guys (also while he’s been working–he gets more, working in the gun department of a major outdoor store)…both two hours away from the site.
Michigan has huge, VAST forests that go on for hundreds of square miles, craploads of food sources, and deep swamps to ride out the winters (warmer, more cover). They’re here and have always been, I can promise you that with 100% certainty.

I think Will had a super-inflated sense of his “status” in this community, and the moment he felt threatened, he bailed. I think he doesn’t know that outside of the SC crowd, not many people even know who he is.
