I appreciate your responses, Shannon, Wolf, CJM, Marc, Knobby.
The UK is a long way from being perfect. I realise there is bias everywhere. I distrust all media to the point it is difficult to know what to believe, except from gut instinct. The BBC is the only news I access and I take that with a pinch of salt. In addition I sometimes look at forums to check out alternate views when I have time (which isn’t a lot). I cancelled my SC membership a few weeks ago and thought it would be a shame not to have some interaction once I started looking at this forum content, in what is now my final week. I’ve been a member of SC for 5.5years, shame I didn’t get involved earlier.

The NHS is in constant crisis, private health care is just too tempting for the Conservatives and is being implemented by stealth. Wholesale ‘profit over investment’ foundations laid by good old Maggie Thatcher’s privatisation of anything she could lay her hands on in the 1980s. University education is not free and will now typically cost £30k just for course fees (unless you’re Scottish and studying in Scotland – I think that is still the case Marc?).

Brexit has caused problems, people wanted ‘their country back’ I have not seen any benefit yet. According to Goldman Sachs, Brexit has cost the UK economy 5% and is underperforming compared to the EU and the US. Skilled workers from the EU went back to Europe. Thousands of tons of untreated human waste is dumped into rivers and coastal areas, with no penalties…

Anyhow, I’m going way off topic, all the best SC folk! It is good to understand alternate viewpoints.
I’ll not let the door hit my ‘ass’ on my way out!

ps It’ll be nice to get some solid disclosure on Sasquatch someday, to prove the doubters wrong!

My beef isn’t with people in the USA selling off their family jewels. It’s happening everywhere, including Saudi Arabia buying up sports enterprises globally (sports-washing). A lot of this is down to good old fashioned human greed and short termism, and to hell with the consequences, it’s nothing new. I don’t like it by the way, but I cannot stop them.

I still do not see why a de-stabilised Europe and NATO is the silver bullet for the USA’s internal woes. Unless it’s an agenda that Russia really wants Trump to push. Russia does not allow dissent/free press/political opponents, that’s why Putin is so ‘popular’, or is that what you want to happen? e.g. ‘the time for half measures is over’ and the only way out is to have a firm dictatorial hand?

I suspect it is one thing to admire such a regime from a distance compared to having to live under it in person.

I do not understand why the southern border is so open however, it’s crazy.

I do not want war in Europe either, but Europeans are generally worried about Russian expansionism if Ukraine falls, that is why there is military support from within Europe.

The bottom line for many people in Europe is, would you want to live under Russian control or EU control? I do think Europe needs to stop relying on the USA and look to it’s own defence. Pity as most stood shoulder to shoulder with the USA after 9-11.

I’d imagine Putin was close to fainting once day 3 of his SMO expired.
If there is a chapter in art of war entitled ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ this type of ‘faint’ tactic may be under that? I am aware of the quote in that book about waiting by the river long enough. Ironically this is exactly what China is doing and they have all the time in the world. They won’t mind who floats by, USA, Western Europe, Russia, Taiwan, Japan…..insert anyone here. They will wait and pick up the pieces.

Genuine question, based upon this thread’s obvious pro-Russian sentiment. What is the preferred conclusion to what is happening in eastern Europe? Do you want Russia & Trump to de-stabilise Europe & NATO? Is Russia now the preferred ally instead of Western Europe?

Why did Russia attempt to take the Ukrainian capital via Belarus if they were only interested in Donbas and Crimea? If their operation succeeded, would the Russians hand it back to the Ukrainians and focus only on Donbas and Crimea? Alternatively would Russia have installed a puppet in the capital to expand their influence throughout the country?

If you lived in Ukraine, would you want to be governed by Moscow?
The world is and always has been a troubled place, if you are divided, you will get conquered, look at the history books, nothing will ever change, as the song goes ‘we didn’t start the fire’. Does anyone really think there was ever an idyllic period in history? If I lived in a country that bordered Russia and it was a relatively weak country – guess what! I think I would prefer EU style citizen’s rights and a NATO umbrella to the alternative.
It appears Ukrainian people would rather be under EU influence than Russian, is anyone really surprised?
There is no perfect country on this planet and corruption is everywhere.
But I don’t see the Ukrainian population rising up, demanding Russian control, if they are, I would be interested to see the evidence. I get the impression that Ukrainian people will resist Russian aggression, with or without US aid.
