ParticipantWe live on the mountain right down the road from DeSoto. You betcha the past eight years we have taken full advantage of the beauty surrounding us. Any season. The best views of Little River Canyon are in the bleak and cold of winter! Only time of the year to fully appreciate how deep the canyon is!Summer totally hides that view.

ParticipantThis all happened and resolved 8-7 years ago. We have rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, foxes, groundhogs……roaming the acres. But they did not show up until almost a year after we moved in. Around fall 2015. And the dog did not seem to notice the brief singing.

ParticipantWe found the house in June 2014. The house was built in 1994/95. One prior family owned the home, and their life story had a few unique parallels to ours. The house is 1800 sq ft, one story, wrap screened porch same sq ft as house. All the rooms have generous floor to ceiling windows, and French doors. Originally the house was a weekend getaway for the owners who lived in Rome GA. But they built the house for all season living.
It took the entire Summer of 2014 to close on the purchase. On the weekends we would drive the 2 1/2 hours from our home in Atlanta, spend a few hours enjoying the property, then drive back south. On these visits we notice how quiet the place was. The former owner crafted numerous birdhouses that were hung on trees all over the property. So we knew their had to be birds…but we didn’t see or hear any on these visits. Also missing was any other wildlife, no squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits.(weird but great-no mosquitos, and few flies-to this day!)..But being city folk we did not find this very strange. We also did not get a feeling of unease. We figured the place went to sleep after the former owners moved out a few years prior.
The purchase went through September 2014. I moved in full time November 2014. My husband spent every other week up here due to his job, and pending sale of our home in Atlanta. He didn’t fully move until fall 2015.
Because of the lack of neighbors(acres of woods), and the house being .25 miles off the main road, I did not hang any drapes on the French doors in the bedrooms. The weather that December was mild. I kept the house open at all hours. It was wonderful.
On one of those nights, husband in Atlanta, I woke up to what sounded like men mumbling in the woods just outside the main bedroom. About 4 to 6 feet from the porch. Boy was I mad! I could not tell what they were talking about. I thought it was because of their dialect. I thought maybe some locals were hunting, and did not know the house was re occupied. I sprung out of bed, yelling the house was occupied, and started slamming windows and doors shut-for extra effect. Making my anger known.
Nothing came of that. I let my husband know. We put up drapes on the doors. I also noticed during this fall/early winter my own bird feeders had no takers. And the property remained quiet and animal free. But we never had any odd feelings-being watched, ect. And I used to wander in the early morning up to one of the fields to look at the stars.
In Feburary 2015 I took our dog out at 6 am. Crisp clear weather. As I approached a patch of woods opposite the house I realized I could hear singing comming out of the woods. It was etherial. Lasted less than a minute. Did not frighten me. Just mystified.
Shortly after this the birds were at my feeders. We started to notice small animals-squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks that spring. A family of deer appeared fall 2015-and they make the rounds to this day. -
