Man investigating barking finds dog impaled on tree limb

Editors Note> “CAS officials say no foul play is suspected, and it is believed the dog ran up the tree after an animal and slipped.” Does this make sense to anyone? The dog ran up a tree after an animal….the dog was impaled on tree limb, 15 feet up. I have never seen a dog “run” up a tree.

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – A man who heard a dog barking non-stop on Wadmalaw Island this past weekend found the animal impaled on a tree limb.

Officials with the Charleston Animal Society said the man walked through an entire marsh to find the dog 15 feet in the air.

CAS officials say no foul play is suspected, and it is believed the dog ran up the tree after an animal and slipped.

The dog was rescued by Charleston County Animal Control Officers and was carried out of the marsh on a stretcher.

He was then brought to Charleston Animal Society for treatment.

He was examined, underwent surgery for his wound, given fluids and is under close observation.

According to a spokeswoman with the Charleston County Animal Society, the stick didn’t go into the wall of his stomach or puncture his intestines.

He did have a microchip for identification and his current owners are being contacted.

The pet is in critical guarded condition.

“This was a close call for this pet, and we are doing everything possible to save him,” said Charleston Animal Society Senior Director of Veterinary Care Lucy Fuller, “if it weren’t for people’s generous donations to our medical fund, Toby’s Fund, we wouldn’t be able to save animals like this one.”

Hmmm……… If you look at the photos in the original news article, they don’t appear to match the pictures in the submission to the Blog.

The picture in the news article shows a dog stuck on a branch that appears to be about 15 feet above the ground, but there don’t appear to be any branches immediately above the dog’s location.

To me, it seems logical that if the dog did, in fact, slip and fall to impale itself, …..then it must have fallen from an even higher branch.

Now maybe it’s just because I have spent my life hanging around with stupid dogs, ….but I have never seen a dog that could get to a height of twenty or twenty-five in a tree: ….And I kinda suspect that dogs capable of such a feat are few and far between!

A quick application of Occam’s Razor leads me to believe that the simpler, more likely explanation is that SOMETHING or SOMEONE stuck that dog in that position.

I only know of a very few dogs that would climb a tree and those are mostly a coon hound type. I’ve never heard of one going that high either. Very suspicious to me, and I sure hope the dog survives and his “people” take better care of him. Hard lesson.

I also have seen dogs run up trees, the tree has to have certain caricaturistics. Slope, other limbs, etc. I havent seen pics of this tree. Poor dog, I hope the owners keep him home from now on!

Now this is a most amazing thing. Are we to believe that a dog can climb a tree, slip and fall ,and thereby impale himself on a tree limb which is at approximately an 85 angle Degree ( I cannot really tell which branch it is impaled on ) with enough force to permanently impale himself?…….I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT!

Two names….Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. Outside of those two dogs I’m not buying it. I feel the dog was placed there for safe keeping until. . . . . . .?

I’m not saying this dog ran up a tree but if you look on YouTube and type German shepherd runs up tree or better yet pit bull runs up tree you will see some insane videos of these dogs running up trees extremely high. Over 15 feet. This story seems suspicious though. Not sure how it would impale itself the way they run up trees.

Ill check out the videos, I have never seen a dog run up a tree. Maybe my dogs have always been fat and lazy. I have a pit bull and I am convinced he thinks he is a small cat, since he sleeps 20 of the 24 hours in a day.

I have no doubt if this poor dog survives it’s ordeal,
it will cower to it’s outdoor surroundings for
    the rest of it’s life.

I agree with you Christopher C.

I’m not sure about that. I can’t believe the dog survived that. That’s honestly the craziest part of the story to me. That poor thing was probably in agonizing pain. Running 15 feet up a tree to slip n puncture yourself doesn’t sound plausible for a dog. N from the pictures, it’s a little suspect how’d he run up the tree slip and then impale itself from the side? To rule out foul play, when you actually read all the variables of what they think happened, is just ridiculous to say the least. I just find it hard to believe that the dog accidentally impaled himself from the side 15 feet up a tree. It’s almost insulting to the reader to try and play it off as an accident

Really… you guyes Your Dogs can’t fly. I have 2 shepherd’s that have capes. With Big S on them. Really .they can leap big redwoods in a single bound. Na just kidding. And I never seen them fly. Well other then off a dock. So this jasper in the tree DONT seem RIGHT. HOPE he’s ok. Odd thing foresure.

Here we go with “official” pronouncements:
“CAS officials say no foul play is suspected, and it is believed…”
I am so very reassured to know that “it is believed” that the dog ran up the tree.
Who ACTUALLY believes this ridiculous theory? I’ll tell you – nobody does. Not one single person believes it, including the spokesperson for the CAS. If anyone did, there would be a more specific phrase used than “it is believed”.

Maybe…. Something was storing food for later. That poor dog, I hope he makes it. There is no way my dog could climb a tree… He struggles sometimes to climb onto his couch.

“it is believed”….by whom? How many? Let’s take a show of hands…come on…Is anyone going to raise their hand?

I ran with a guy who had radio collared lion hounds here in Colorado. When they treed a mountain lion a few could jump up 5 ft to the crotch of a lower limb, but climb no higher. The funniest thing was when my buddy brian climbed the tree and pulled on a big toms tail and it pissed all over him with a nice spray.

I wouldn’t get too excited about this story it looks quite possible that the dog’s front legs slip and impaled on the inside of the left thigh on a short tree limb The picture posted here is not the actual photo it’s a bulldog hanging vertically go online and look at the photo

  13. Tristene M

My dog could climb almost anything, but this is pure bs. Saying a bear swiped him and made him fly up in the tree would be more plausible (but still unbelievable) then their official lie. I’ve heard of grasping at straws but man oh man this takes the cake.

I have Jack Russell Terriers. They climb trees. This story makes me want to SEE the tree, and the branch that impaled the dog. We do have a family member, who had a dog impaled on a low- limb (punctured his heart,) during play and a run in the forest. His dog died. But this was a limb close to the ground.

With this kind of witness involvement, in the dog’s rescue, it should be easy enough to take pictures of the site. Otherwise, yes, some dogs climb trees, and sometimes accidents happen.
