A listener writes “So I have been listening to the show for over three years now every time I listen to it with my youngest son Nate he says I should email you about my encounter. It wasn’t an actual sighting.
Well it was kind of I was at this lake in upstate New York just got done doing about a 16 mile hike And was getting water at the lake. I looked across the lake diagonally probably two 300 yards and I saw these two black objects which I thought were loons just because I was exhausted and they were splashing each other but I distinctly remember seeing one hand, and the other not rhythmically with both hands like a waterfowl would do , so I sat there on the rock got some water and then went to the lean to that I was staying in that night
I fell asleep. I’m guessing seven thirtyish it was dark. It was The end of September, so I was getting dark early and I got a really small fire going probably about the size of coke just because it was wet out and I heard these howl hoots. I first of all thought they might’ve barn owls. But there was one in front of me that would make the noise and then one behind me would make the noise and they would alternate Callin and we’re getting closer. I remember laying there thinking what is that? They’re not owl because they had this gutter roll to them and not a hoot if that makes sense.
So after about five or six of this call back-and-forth and I’m guessing the one in front of me was at the trail which is probably about 50 to 60 yards in front of me and it was dark and the only sound I could really hear where the Callin in the crackling of those little embers I had going trust me that was not a big fire. So finally, I said to myself, something is weird, so I sat up and then I heard the one in front of me start running, and you could hear the 2 feet thumping on the ground as it ran away few seconds later, a large crack of a tree breaking , there is no wind the woods were silent, deafening silent, and there is no reason why a tree would fall over in the woods because there was no wind.
I can go into a lot more detail I’m sitting in my car dictating this to you over voice but I’ll be happy to know that I finally let you hear a brief encounter of my story. It’s just good to finally tell you I can go into a lot more detail versus email.”

Creepy, creepy. I wouldn’t want to be in that place hearing that. I’ve heard them imitate owls before on my mother’s property and quail too, the bob-white call. It’s too loud to be authentic and it’s off a little bit. I think it means, “Hey, there’s a human over here.” Both times I heard the calls I’ve described I was outside or just going outside and had opened the back door. It happened repeatedly.
Good for you to come forward with your stories.

Sounds like a scary night in the woods! Thanks for sharing! I hope Wes contacts you to come on the show.
