A listener writes “Back in 79 I was 14..I grew up in Western New York outside of Rochester. My encounter happened in what we call the southerntier around the finger lakes region.
I went out opening day with my father…my uncle cancelled on my Dad didn’t want to go alone. I had the great task (sarcasm) of pushing deer to my Dad. I had a empty 12 gauge with a couple shells in my pocket for safety reasons. At those time I wasn’t old enough at 14 to hunt big game. I remember it was really cold and overcast once daylight appeared, but not snowing at this time, however there was some patches of snow here in there.
I ran across a high wire fence in the middle of this stretch of woods that I had to climb over to proceed.. eventually I came across a fairly deep gully with high ridges on both sides. On the one to my right a large tree had fallen and I climbed up the embankment and squatted down for a break laying my shotgun across my lap.
I could see the other ridge pretty clear. Being exhausted I had my back up against the tree and nodded off. I woke up hearing what sounded like a heavy branch snapping and I panned the area as I was slowly looking around the area and I noticed something different on the opposite ridge that totally looked out of place than I remembered before I nodded off.
As I slowly focused my vision to the other ridge, I saw something I just couldn’t understand. I know what a bear looks like and what I was seeing was not a bear…It was big, very large and it was just standing there on two feet n holding on to a small tree with one arm stretched out…and that’s when I could see it was a dark hand grasping the tree..I believe it was it’s left arm.. Being that it was cold out I couldn’t see its face but I could see it’s breath flowing through its long straggly clumps of hair that was covering its face completely.
It just stood there breathing looking my way and I didn’t know what to do.. I was never so terrified n frozen in fear.. I didn’t dare move one bit kind of like I was hoping that it didn’t see me leaning up against the fallen tree, but I knew better.
As for It’s height. I could only guess maybe 7 or 8 foot tall.. I noticed it shoulders were very very wide and its arms were big but longer than they should’ve been. Its color was kind of brownish but it had light areas on its thighs in the front. It’s hair. Was I call it? Hair was very clumpy and long and some area’s especially along it’s arms and head…you could tell it had dirt and leaves throughout it and it was very bulky from the waist down.
Meaning it’s thighs were enormous and I looked at this thing for what seemed to be a lifetime but was probably close to 5 minutes which was totally long enough for me..It had not moved. Just breathing through the long hair in front of its face.
It’s head really wasn’t off shaped like conical..it was just a large head and all of a sudden it took a step forward on the ridge towards me and my body just seemed to take control and I ran as fast as I could never once looking back.
I came across that high fence I had run into earlier that morning and I don’t even remember how I got over it under it especially carrying my 12 gauge..I just don’t remember.. I got to the gravel road out of the woods that earlier my Dad had dropped me off n of course our pinto wagon was nowhere to be found.
So I started very quickly walking up the gravel road never looking back.. I got over the crest of the road and there it was low and behold the pinto wagon my sanctuary.. I got to it n of course it’s locked.. So I waited and waited for my dad to show up and when he did he was not a happy person and he didn’t believe a thing I told him.
That’s pretty much what happened in a nutshell and it changed my outside life forever.”

Scary for sure. I’m sorry your dad didn’t believe you. Thanks for sharing.
