I Thought Someone Was Beating Rocks Together

A listener writes “Hey Wes. I’ve had a couple experiences over the last 15 years. I deer hunt as much as i can but im not like most deer hunters these days where they ride a 4 wheeler park and walk 100 yards to their tree stand.

Where I hunt is just across the river of the Breaks Interstate Park on the Virginia and Kentucky state line. Most days at a minimum I hike in 3 to 5 miles. This far back in the mountain ive never seen a person. I guess never had anybody walk in there on me I should say. Well I did this that morning and i sat there and listened to what I thought was someone beating rocks together. It was definitely a rock on a rock. The sounds was total random.

It might hit once then 20 seconds later be 3 times real quick. I was like who in the hell would hike 3 miles in this mountain to beat rocks together. This went on for about a hour or so. The second experience I was catfishing with my mom, brother, wife, daughter and nephew. This was the following summer. Well where we was fishing at the river comes of real swift so its really loud. My daughter and nephew was at the lower end of the hole of water where its calm.

Well my nephew walks up to where we was at and says dad talking to my brother says somebody’s throwing rocks in the river. We was like no no it was probably just a fish coming up and getting a bug of the water or something. So he goes back to fishing and maybe 5 minutes later he comes back and says their doing it again. So this time I get up walk down there and a rock about the size of a baseball lands about 3 feet in front of me. I holler at my brother to come down there and a couple more hit the water. My brother has a 9mm on his hip and we thought about cranking off a couple shots but after we talked about it decided we didnt want to teach the kids that if you hear something strange to shoot at it. So we just packed up our stuff and left.

The 3rd experience was about 7 years ago. I had a friend that wanted to start deer hunting with me where i hunt at. This place has some monster bucks in there if you can just get up with one. So I tell him look you can go but just be aware I think something lives down so if something weird happens i don’t want you to freak out. Of course he laughed and said I was just messing with him. Im like ok I warned you. So we hike in there and this time it was probably a little over 4 miles back to scout out a place.

He packs a brand new lock on tree stand in there and we put it up. So its the opening day of early muzzleloader season and we head in there. Well the place I took him is nothing but cliffs except for one little break that you can get through. Ive always referred to it as the notch. So we are about half way through the notch and its still pitch black out and something lets out the god awful scream. It was loud and just so deep and long I really just can’t explain it. It was a scream that would make a mother go find her children. That’s how scarry it was. He looks at me shaking like a leaf and says what the hell was that. I just said see I told you something lives down here. And no sooner than I said that something across the river answered it. So now im actually a little worried because now whatever done it we are in between them. So we wait until daylight and hunt for awhile with no luck. So after we get back to the truck and I asked him when are we going back and he says he won’t be back. I said what about your tree stand and he says “f that tree stand whatever that was can have it. So thats my experiences.”

I bet that was a creepy place. You know 3-4 miles in doesn’t sound like much to some people, but it is. Especially when it’s already remote and the road ends….well walking another 3-4 miles is like the other side of the world.
