I stood frozen in place

A listener writes “Back in the spring of 2020 when covid was causing a lot of people to question a lot of things, my ex and I had decided to head to the white mountains in NH to “weather the storm”. At the time my best friend Carl and his family owned several properties in and north of the white mountains “ski country”.

I spent my childhood until the age of about 10 growing up just south of this area in NH, moved south to MA/RI with my family later on.

This property we were staying at was gorgeous, secluded, and the perfect place to try and “weather” an uncertain situation like covid. My friends family were in the middle of renovating a beautiful ski home at the time, I was being compensated as plumber by trade, and taking full advantage of this time with my best friend, my girlfriend, and this beautiful area I had grown up in.

There’s a path leading directly out of the back of the property of carls house, wide enough to drive a tractor down for sure, I had been down there a couple times in the past with Carl. On this night myself, Carl, and my girlfriend at the time Courtney decided we would walk down the trail, a good mile I’d say, to a point where the tree line on your right breaks and you have a beautiful view of Crawford Notch and the rest of the presidential mountains (which I highly recommend visiting if you have not).

We got down to this spot where there’s even a small cut out wooden bench made by the prior owner to Carl’s property. We brought 3 beers down, one for the each of us. We sat there on the bench for close to an hour staring at the presidential mountains and talking about, well… covid. Carl eventually decided it was time to go back and start dinner, Courtney quickly brushed the idea off and said she had wanted to stay a little longer. It was at this point that the ensuing events will never leave my memory….

I told Courtney we could stay a little longer and Carl that he should head back and start dinner. I’ll add that we had just gotten about 4”-6” of snow the night prior. Carl thought nothing of it as I did and started back up the mile hike uphill in the snow through the woods back to the house. I figured I’d use the time to work some things out with my girlfriend as covid had definitely put some stresses on our relationship. At this point Courtney’s demeanor toward me and her surroundings had completely changed.

The sun had started to dwindle behind Mt Jefferson at this point, and for some reason that I can’t explain I had this sinking feeling in my stomach… I’m a two tour combat veteran, grew up in the woods, been through survival school, SERE school, brought up living and breathing the New England wilderness, and for some reason Wes… I felt the most uneasy I had felt in a long time, even during an uncertain society altering pandemic, I had never felt more uneasy and unsafe then the moment that sun started to set…

The strange part about all of this is that Courtney was on the complete opposite end of that spectrum… I started to plead with her to come back and that I didn’t feel well and that I didn’t want to guide us back in the dark, when in reality my skin was crawling for some unknown reason…

At this point she turned to me, from 10 yards away down the trail, and said “Randy, Randy…. Randy… there’s an owl”. I brushed this off thinking she was trying to give any reason to not go back to the house. As I’m thinking this, I hear the first “hoot”. I turn to my left, where she was about 10 yards down the trail, and she’s staring up into the trees. The second hoot comes, from a location about 20 yards further back up the mountain side. At this point my attention was on her, I no longer thought she was joking, I had now heard 2 of them. While my head is turned to the left looking at her down the trail I hear a snap of something behind me, which Wes at this point put me on high alert.

I was upright, I had a hand in my right hip on my .40 cal beretta and had a feeling of encroachment or being encircled. I turned and stared at Courtney trying to process what was happening, she was transfixed on the wood line… in an almost trance. At this point we heard the third “owl” from up the hill… it came as if a heavy man who had just hiked up a cliff side was impersonating an owl, but also weighed 800lbs… the percussion, bass, and pure lack of effort in the attempt stopped me in my tracks. I turned and looked up the mountain in I guess what all you can explain as is amazement… because every other instinct in my body was telling me to run. I stood frozen in place for at least 5-10 seconds. At this point all hell broke loose. Courtney came running and screaming up the trail toward and past me, and Wes I’ve seen this woman for years, she doesn’t deal with shit, bartender, won’t beat around the bush, cuss out bikers and tell ‘em to get screwed without a thought… she came running by me up this trail screaming with a look of fear like I cannot explain, but if I can try… if you’ve ever seen someone so terrified their face is almost long, it takes on this strange elongated, exasperated, honestly scary look… this is exactly what she had as she high kneed it past me at an insane rate. All I can say at this point is that we ran that mile long uphill stretch in 6” of snow without stopping once, I actually stopped and whipped around pulling my pistol and flashlight out for a moment until her screams honestly pulled me back off as she continued running… I could hear something on us, I could feel something on us, we never stopped to find out more.

When we got back to the house she burst through the door and crumbled into a ball, my buddy ran up, we tried to console her, I tried to work through what she had seen and all I could get from her was “ a large black object very low to the grind coming up the trail to our right”  “almost silent” she said.

I have more to add to this property if you’re interested, among some other things I’d really appreciate your opinion on. I’m not very good with the sharing pictures and videos deal so I’ll send what I have following this.

Thanks Wes, hope yo hear back from you”
