I shot a Sasquatch at point blank range

The listener writes “I still have a hard time understanding what happened to me. I was charged after being hit with a baseball sized rock, after I fell down by my truck it came over the bed of my truck I was able to pull my pistol and shot it over the left eye and it ran away but continued to throw rocks. My encounter is much more than I can write in an email……”

I spoke to the gentleman this morning and he has agreed to come on the show. I find him to be a very credible witness and some of the behaviors he describes I have heard first hand but have not talked about on the show. He was hunting and a rock hit him in the chest, the witness describes how the creature threw the rock which is very interesting because I have heard this “off the air” several times. He caught sight of the creature and ran for his truck. When he got to his truck he threw his rifle in the back and dropped his keys. The witness was upset, shaking and fell to the ground. The creature cleared a distance of 75 yards in a matter of seconds and was now on the other side of his truck. The creature came over the bed of his truck and was within a few feet of him. He describes in detail what it looked like. He said the creature kept screaming at him and was moving closer. He pulled out his pistol and shot it right above its left eye. The caliber he was using was not enough to penetrate the skull but he knows he hit it. He said that the creature let out another scream and ran off. He was able to get into his truck and drive off. As he was driving a soccer ball sized rock hit the rear panel of his truck.

As you can imagine the witness still struggles with what happened to him to this day.

Completely agree. If it were me, I would be dead, since I don’t (do now!) have a practice of packin’ heat! Can you copy a link of Tracy G’s encounter?

    • Dave S

So let me get this straight, first the creature hit the guys with a baseball sized rock from 75 yards, 3/4 of a football field. Then the guy shots him above the eye and the bullet doesn’t penetrate the skull. Even a 22 can penetrate the skull. I think the distance is exaggerated .

      • sarah m

A 357 mag may not penetrate a Grizzly skull , so it doesn’t surprise me that it didnt kill a Sasquatch.. the guy was scared maybe it just grazed the creature… Very scary encounter….

I would surmise that, even though the caliber wasn’t adequate to “complete the task”, without an armed response this gentleman would have been another story for the annals of “Missing 411”.

I am so glad, Wes, you don’t work for the Dept of the Interior. Your canned response to this traumatized man would have been, “Congratulations! You just wounded a bear….”

    Cheers, Steve

Great! Can’t wait to hear this one. Omy – a head shot and it didn’t stop it? From that close? Well, I’m gonna have to get a bigger gun…. soon.

  3. Rick F

I’m sure if it were me, I would have not just shot (1) round above the left eye, I would have been so scared I would have emptied the clip.

    • Asheim

Agree Rick! I would have kept firing aiming for the eyes. He was that close except for the shaking a good marksman could have hit their target.

  4. Trent M

C’mon, the bigfoot was just “gifting” him a rock and then ran up to “hug” him. We all know they are just shy peaceful forest people. Shakes head

  5. Tyler D

GATOR DON’T PLAY THAT SHIT, YA FEEL ME? NEVER BEEN ABOUT THAT. It’s always the people that are not looking for sasquatch that have some of the best most intense encounters. Why are these animals so hard to drop?? I would regularly say because of the size and muscle mass but this sasquatch got shot in the skull at extremely close range n still didn’t drop. It just agitated it and probably pissed it off even more. I wonder if the sasquatch died later from it’s wound or if he just brushed it off like a bb or a pellet? That had to be extremely traumatizing for that poor guy. I can only imagine the fear and the adrenaline pumpin while this guy is getting rushed by this massive creature that he probably didn’t even know existed. I could only imagine

That is going to be a great interview, thank you Wes. Can’t help but think that we really would not hear any of these encounters if not for SasCron. Also, this guy did really good, to clear his sidearm and get one off, no small feat in my opinion. Anyone thats practiced point shooting and shooting on the move will recognize, this was not a bad shot either. The first rule of squatch fighting, is the same as the first rule of knife fighting- use a gun! Like the new pic Debbie C

  7. Jan W

The first question my husband asked when I read him this encounter was: “what caliber was the gun? The thing must have a very thick skull if ithe bullet didn’t penetrate.” I can hardly wait to hear this gentleman’s story!

  8. Brian M

The classic neanderthal brow ridge and low forehead has a skull that goes back at quite an angle, I can imagine a shot hitting a glancing rather than penetrative blow.

  9. MilitantDanny

I know of Marines that took hits to the dome with 7.62×54 or 7.62×39 through the years of the GWOT that because it hit at just the right angle despite still being steep, the round ended up following the skull rather than penetrating. Still a bloody mess and disoriented them all up but they survived and made full recoveries as they were really superficial wounds in the grand scheme of things.

  10. Ben H

That was crazy, I can’t wait to hear the show. Great job with the show Wes. I was not a member until after everything got a little hairy, to show support.
    Glad I did !!!

Yea, how many hunters, loggers have stories such as these but are afraid to come forward. Wes thanku for providing this forum as I feel more guys such as this will shed their fears of sharing knowing that SC is a safe place to vent what they’ve been holding on to. I can’t imagine the trauma this guy is going through after an experiance like the one he had. Thanks for stepping up your game man, great show

Kind of reminds me of the scene in No Country for Old Men where Llewellyn Moss is being chased by an attack dog, clears and loads his pistol in just enough time to hit the animal point blank. But that was “just a dog”

    • James L

If this story don’t scare you…. it’ll do until the scary gets here. (For those of you who don’t have No Country for Old Men Memorized, I’m paraphrasing a Tommy Lee Jones Line)

  13. Debbie C

If this happened to me, I would most likely have a massive heart attack, die instantly.
This will be one of those interviews I’m looking forward to the most!

    • Steven B

Debbie, (and anyone else that may be concerned in encountering cryptids that have unresolved anger issues), perhaps you may wish to consider contacting these guys for “protection” from Samsquanches …just don’t get in their way..then again…maybe not. 😉 😀

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJphX1WtVSY (language warning for video) Hope y’all enjoy. I know I’ve posted this before but seeing as I see new faces/names – I thought it might bring a smile to the newest members here. 🙂

        • Steven B

You’re very welcome. I can’t help but laugh every time I view it. I’m not much for profanity, but it all strikes me, as you said, “hilarious”.

          • Steven B

Thanks, Patrick, Glad you enjoyed. Yeah, finally figured out how to do it. I right mouse clicked on a member photo and selected “properties” so I could find the website the photo was coming from (gravatar.com). After that I just visited the “Gravatar” website, joined by following their instructions, uploaded a photo, linked this website…and…BEHOLD!!! The Samsquanch has a pic! 😉

  14. DONNA G

Thanks, Wes. I can’t wait to hear his story. He sure was blessed to be able to escape that situation. Since BF was so close to this man and the bullet to the head did not kill it, BF could have easily decapitated him with one swoop of its arm instead of turning and running. I can’t imagine the fear this man felt during and after all this occurred.

  15. craig b

I would be interested to hear what damage a baseball sized rock thrown from 75 yards does when it hits a man’s chest. I would think that much force would knock a man down, leave massive bruisng, potentially break bones, etc.

  16. Sean C

Thank God he lived to tell the story, of such a scary freakin’ encounter. I think my days in the woods would be officially over after that! Me too, I can’t wait to hear this man’s story………

Thanks again Wes, for all of your awesome dedication and hard work, to bring us such informative encounters! We love you bro! See you in Texas………..

My question is did he put down the big gun and shoot the Squatch with the little gun? People never never never ever run from a predator! Did I mention never? Anyway, you are making yourself the prey. It doesn’t matter what it is, lion, bear, squatch…whatever. They will chase you down! You can’t out run them! You have a better chance at survival showing strength and if anything slowly backing away from them and don’t turn your back until you’re at a safe distance. You want to give them the impression that if they mess with you it’s gonna cost them. This guy might have prevented that charge if he showed that squatch he meant business with the rifle. He’s lucky cause the pea shooter still probably saved his life. Like I keep saying if you die with a gun in your hand and never pulled the trigger, you are an idiot! Atleast this guy didn’t do everything wrong and can tell his story. Can’t wait to hear it.

Wow … to have a monster in your face… can’t say u want to see one that bad… or a aggressive one Luke this… I THINK THIS ONE WILL BE TROUBLE FOR SOMEONE ELSE ALSO… IT had a stick in its associated for people before this happened… NOW THE STICKS A BRANCH…. BE VERY CAREFUL OUT THERE. ..

  19. Papa - Yeti

I’m nothing of an ‘experienced professional armchair -gunslinger’, but Power, caliber and penetration really does maters. It was quite a challenge for that man to recover from a –screaming flying rock –missile upside his head, regaining your compose only to have an ugly creature rushing down upon you and getting a steady aim and firing a head shot. But if he had a hand cannon like a .50 caliber he could have tore its cranium apart along with incinerating the creature in the muzzle flash. My Favorite western Quote is featured in True West Magazine, the article is “ACE IN THE HOLE” ‘for frontier gamblers, a tiny derringer, like the ‘Sharps’ four –barrel Pepperbox,’ could decide a man’s fate. -One frontiersman, threatened with a .22 derringer, slapped it out of his assailant’s hand and said: “If anyone ever shot me with a twenty –two… and I found out about it, I’d skin him alive!”

  20. Elmer Fudd

Even .22 will penetrate a skull, its not a question of caliber its where he hit it. Study some ape and neanderthal skulls and you’ll see why the shot was not effective. You have to shoot at the eyes with a head shot.

  21. Elmer Fudd

Possibly, though he should not be thinking that whatever he shot it with didn’t have the power to penetrate, there’s not much above the eyes to penetrate, though I’m sure he gave it a big headache lol.

  22. Rod C

Yes and a face full of powder burn to boot. But in these type situations there is most likely more than one. While it is screaming at you to keep your attention…watch what is running up behind you as well. Team hunters/predators.

  23. Kay S

It says he shot it above the eye. I would imagine the brow ridges on a Sasquatch would be very thick indeed. That coupled with their shape… A bullet could easily glance off. Let’s hope he gave it one heck of a headache.

  24. Mason W

Very interesting encounter. I believe his story as well. I believe Sasquatch encounters aren’t something people just make up usually. Except for the ones who say “I saw Sasquatch on a unicorn” or any other crap like that. My encounter was similar to this. Wonder what provoked the creature to charge him……territory maybe? Mother protecting her young? Wes good to see you’re finding great stories for your show. Love listening to it every night

  25. Kenneth M

Wow! This is going to be interesting. Can hardly wait for the story.
As others pointed out a 22 can sometime penetrate a skull sometimes not. A 22 is high velocity, with a narrow corss section – will poke a hole into something easier than a larger caliber despite the overall loweer energy. When Your shooting at odd angles and tissue can flex back all rules are off for what a gun can normally due. If you had a 38 special, or even an old 45 colt would likely not penetrate thick bone. I’ve shot animals with a 45acp at odd angles and it ball ammo didn’t penetrate. A sasquatch skull is likely on the thick side – It probably left a boo boo that won’t rub out. Glad someone shot one!

  26. Matt f

Holy shit cant wait for this one.Alot of factors come into play whith this one as far as why projectile didnt penetrate.Height difference causing trajectory to be at probably 30-45 degree angle, skull thickness and creatures sloped forehead making bullet angle even shallower.Cant say what i wouldve done but like to think i would have pulled trigger minimum of 4-5 times. But until your in that situation one can only speculate.Wonder if this is the dude who posted on FB he had a story but scared to share.

  27. Kim L

As the specs of the pistol used are unknown, at this point anyway, the most important lesson to take from this encounter is, he had a gun and it saved his life. We teach concealed carry students in every class, “the best pistol for the job–is the one you have with you” That big ol S&W X frame in .500 mag, is of no use at all at home in the safe or locked in the truck back at the trailhead. We can be certain, however, if the pistol just described was the one used in the encounter, the muzzle blast alone would result in BF crapping his britches also! A note about bullet configuration, there are many bullets that are excellent choices for dangerous game, but, here we’re dealing with a glancing shot off bone. PHs who want a big bullet to penetrate and not glance off those big bones, often use flat point, very hard cast bullets, the theory being, the sharp edge of that flat point, will dig in to bone and break it, rather than glance off and into soft tissue. Might be something to consider when choosing ammo for protection in the woods. Personally, I no longer hunt, but, I don’t feel that obligates me to willingly become BF poop either. I’d rather eat a turd than shoot a BF, but if it’s me or him– it’s time for the .454 casull !
