I don’t believe it could’ve been a bear or a person

A listener writes “July 4th weekend of 2017, My dad and I went out to camp at a rather new at the time campsite that my dad had reserved on the Alaska DNR website for the K’esugi Ken campground that had just opened that year, just under 2 months after the Alaska DNR opened the campground. As I have listened to a lot of your podcast’s episodes, I believe that detail is important because of the curiosity of some bigfoot, as after research I don’t believe it could’ve been a bear or a person.

The day we got there and the night after it was just a normal camping experience for me and my Dad. You as a hunter would understand just setting up the tent, building a fire, cooking dinner, all the responsibilities as some would say. My Dad brought our family’s two dogs Bo and Tigger at the time. And they fell asleep in the SUV we came in cause my dad doesn’t care for sleeping in a tent, probably because of his army experiences and such. While I fell asleep in the tent i had just bought the week before the trip.

The night and day was totally normal. I played some video games I had brought along with me or downloaded on my phone at the time while tending to the camp fire occasionally. Early in the afternoon I took a short walk on the ravine creek trail and cause I was getting the feeling I was watched instead of taking the full trail I took the turn that turned into the RV part of the campground and made a quicker paced look around and just got back to the campsite and chilled out for the rest of the day. We had just settled into our beds for the evening, had done our pre-bed routines and had just laid down to chill playing a game called yu-gi-oh dual links on my phone.

For context my tent entrance was facing the 2 o’clock position if the 12/Noon position on the north side of camp site 7/8/9. When all of a sudden, I hear this loud nasally breathe from my right in the wooded ravine section, is about 7 or 8 o’clock by the clock analogy. By nasally breath I mean like a person who just got delivered news that they don’t like and huffs out of their nose but like 5-10x louder than what I believe a person can do. Then like less than a second after that I hear this thing, whatever it was, in what i believe was in 2-3 steps from the rhythm of the steps I could tell this walked like a person. I could not find any footsteps the morning after i woke up the morning afterwards. To then what I want to say is 2-3 feet away from the northern edge of the fake grass 8 by 10 tent site. When it got to this point, I could actually see the shadow of what honestly i can only describe the most physically muscled up or bulked up person with weirdly long shoulders, and what I thought I made out as long hair/fur on the arms, sides and legs. I know these details because the sun was still out although it was brightly starting to set around, I’d say the time was anywhere between 8-10 pm.

Then as I’m pulling out the closest thing to a weapon I can try to defend myself with a small 3-inch knife inside a multi tool. I pulled out the multitool Because I’m starting to get terrified thinking it’s a bear in the moment  which activated my fight or flight and  my body made the foolish decision to take the knife out not because I would slash the creature or anything but so I could slash open my tent and try to run to the SUV. The knife part had just made a very slight click sound that it makes when one of the tool you need locks into place, and then in what I think was a step or two  it went to the southeast side of the tent and Wes I swear to god on a stack of bibles its cover 3-6 feet in a SINGLE step and just took off down the ravine what I can only presume going southeast more through the ravine. It was a little taller than my tent, which is about 6’3-6’5 in height because it’s one of those teepee style tents that sticks up in the center with a y shaped bar that you balance and tie up.

For reference I’m about 5’10 maybe 5’11 with some shoes/boots on while my dad is only about an inch taller than me so whatever I saw couldn’t have been my dad. My dogs weren’t going crazy they were silent all night long. My dad says he didn’t see or hear anything but it’s hard to get him speak about anything he doesn’t want to and kind of just brushes me off. Earlier that day when I took the walk I noticed there were only 2 campers so I doubt it was a person I saw. Plus, bears don’t have a human-like shadow when standing on their hind legs. Even though Anchorage is a decent sized city maybe even big city it’s got enough wilderness to see lots of wild life so I’ve seen bears all the time to know enough about them to know I probably didn’t see a bear walk on its hind legs that far and on that difficult of terrain.  The morning after I took a quick look around but after seeing some small branches broken and what looked be something had made its way down to the trail behind the campsite near the ravine trail. for reference the slope behind the site is about anywhere from id say 45-60 degree incline so the height of the figure wasn’t just 6’3 but 7’3 after I realized the amount of incline the slope had cause of how close the figure was. Again, id like to thank you for reading my story and providing me and others like me with reports to help me and others research.”
