A listener writes “Hello Wes. I have been a listener on and off for the last few years. I’ve decided id like to tell you of my encounter with a giant bird. I live in Jefferson County Ohio which is located in the Ohio Valley not far from the Ohio River.
I was standing outside in late June or early July summer of 2023 having a morning cup of coffee. Normally I have my phone on me but for some unknown reason I had left it inside. I was just enjoying the nice weather before the heat of the day really hit when I heard a sound coming from from off to my right and behind my house. Now my home is completely surrounded by woods, most of the trees that surround the home are large Maples. Now the sound I heard was like a strong wind beating against the tops of the trees. When I looked in that direction a normal buzzard came flying right below the tree line.
I thought at first that it wasn’t making the sound when immediately following it coming along the tops of the trees was the largest bird I have ever seen in my life. The buzzard seemed like it was flying as hard as it could, like it was fleeing the giant bird. It had about a 30 yard lead on the bird and was beating it’s wings as hard as I believe it could. There is a clearing to the left and front of the house that the buzzard flew into as the giant bird came right over top of me.
It took 3 maybe 4 wing beats and it caught and was past that buzzard in a few seconds and it was gone out of sight, but for a few moments I could still hear the sound it was making over the tree tops. Now this bird when it flew above the buzzard had a wing span that dwarfed it. The buzzard wasn’t even as big as one of it’s wings. This bird had a long black beak and I can only describe it as being dark but shiny black like a Raven. Now that clearing I referenced is the width of the one lane gravel road we live on with trees about 3 feet away from it on either side and this birds pretty well filled that gap as it went through it. We have eagles, quite a few actually around us and they don’t come close to the size or presence this thing had.
I immediately told my wife and she kind of laughed about it but she believed I seen something. We joked about it for a few weeks before my mother and brother in law informed her that they seen of in the distance the largest bird they had ever seen. I hadn’t said anything to them about it and neither had my wife. My mother in law has a camper that sits about 150-200 feet away up on a hill behind our house.”

I’m not sure what to think about this. Thanks for sharing.

Perhaps it was a Trumpeter Swan the largest flying bird in Ohio and in fact all of North American and it does have a black beak. However this does not explain the dark color, although they can look greyish.
