A listener writes “I have a degree in forestry. I have been working 50 hours a week in the woods for about ten years now. I’ve been in some of the most remote areas of the PNW, from Montana to Washington.
I once had a 4 foot log thrown uphill at me while eating lunch. A camping situation when something ran threw my camp site. It wasn’t a bear or a moose. I actually ended up shooting my pistol out the tent door into the air to try and scare it away. My dogs who always bark and growl at anything new were silent and right next to my wife like they were protecting her. I may have seen this thing once across a creek drainage but it was too far and too dark to be sure. It was up on two legs which I know bear can do. We have a lot of black bear hear as well as the occasional grizzly.
Ive seen a ton of bears in my line of work. Worked right next to them actually. Walked up on a mama and cubs. Been charged multiple times. This was different. Bears tend to stand on two legs to smell ya. When it runs away it will drop to all 4s. This thing took 5-6 steps before dropping to all 4s. Also the arms of a bear do not swing back past there body most of the time. This things arms swung like a humans. I only saw it for about 8-10 seconds before it disappeared in the timber but in my opinion that thing was not a bear. In my years as a forester I’ve learned there are two different camps. People who know they are out there and people to try and make fun of those people who know. Some of my coworkers who I consider good friends will not even entertain the notion that these things may exist. Its frustrating” sometimes.

My girlfriend read this one over my shoulder and suggested I go to work for our state (Michigan) DNR in my semi-retirement. I think she might be angling for the big fella to put her into my life insurance money a little early.

I completely agree with the accurate statement RE: two schools of thought. Weighing the facts, true facts from hardcore witnesses, brings forth the disrespectful ridicule from complete non-believers. Non-believers are entitled to their beliefs, but ridicule makes you appear foolish. Seeing is believing, not to mention you’ll probably shit your pants. I too was a non-believer until 1994, traveling east bound HWY 50 near twinbridges; between Placerville, ca and South Lake Tahoe, ca. I was one of three vehicles traveling eastbound, when “something huge”, crossed the fourlane section of hwy where passing is allowed. I there was probably 4 to 5 football fields between us; whatever it was dwarfed the hwy lanes. My initial thought process was…” wolf? grizzlie bear? this animal was on all fours, and fast. I was to far away to provide details. What I can say for sure, when i approached the crossing site, my senses and body experienced “fight or flight” with chills. And everytime, I recall this memory, my hair stands up, yet, I am not certain what I witnessed 28 years ago. I never spoke about at it at work, mentioned it a few times on credible websites. fyi…
