A listener writes “Up to last August 2021, I was living in the Ozarks (Marble Hill MO) working as a criminal investigator for Health and Senior Services for the Missouri government. Yes, we observed some weird things while living there.

In August we moved to Truro IA where I am originally from.

My wife goes out to the garage to smoke. In November and December of 2021 there were several times when she ran inside to tell me she heard heavy footsteps and some strange heavy breathing (as in something very large out in the dark). I went out several times with my sidearm, thinking, or rather, I don’t know what I was thinking because this is Iowa. Not grizzly country. Not even a substantial black bear population. This occurred on several occasions. One night she ran in and said she had been standing and looking at the lights in town (we live out on an open plain about a half mile away from Truro, a tiny little town) when something dark passed between her and the town lights. We determined that it had to have been very tall, like Shaq or taller, in order for those lights to have been blocked out from her angle. More recently, I believe about 3 weeks ago, I was sitting in our room and heard, right next to me, a very low growl. Now, I am used to large animals. I grew up working with livestock and horses. I know what big animals sound like. This thing sounded huge, bigger than any dog, and, I guess, could have been a huge bear but we just don’t have those here. Needless to say I was creeped out because the realization of just how thin the wall of a house can be became very obvious. My wife runs in about a minute later, looking wild eyed, and told me she had been in the garage and had heard, to her left (our room is to the left and around the house), this low growl that could have been from something huge. Not a dog. Not even the biggest dog in existence would have that kind of low resonance, and, honestly, we just don’t have anything else here that could have done it. A couple nights later I was sitting in the same spot and a large bang happened against the house. It was as if a large stick had been struck against the house at just below roof level. I have not been able to come up with why or how that happened and by what.

We live in an open area. Yes, there are woods that are approximately two miles away and this is mostly corn and bean fields with a spattering of houses and the trees that accompany them. Although not thickly populated, the homes in this area (all of southern Iowa) are spaced out. There is no place where a huge animal, or probably not a person (unless being very stealthy) could just be hanging out in the woods long term without detection.”
