Creature charged my big rig on California freeway and was killed

I found this encounter interesting and will be following up with the witness.

“Hi Wes,
I’ve been meaning to contact you for some time about what happened in late March or early April of 2014, but my schedule is so busy it’s been difficult because I’m on the road all the time driving a big rig. Both my wife and I witnessed this. Before this happened, although I’m very open minded, I always assumed these creatures never existed. So it was not something that interested me.

I am an owner/operator and mostly run in the western states. I live near Los Angeles and usually take a load from there to Vancouver, Washington two to three times per month. I take the 5 freeway to Vancouver where I pick up another load after delivering the first one. I usually drive alone, but sometimes my wife comes with me, as she did this time.

It was around 10PM one night. We fueled up in Weed near Mount Shasta where there’s a Pilot truck stop then got back on the 5 and headed north for the Oregon border. A few miles down the mountain there’s a final corner before you come into a valley just about a mile or so from a rest area just north of the corner. The load I was hauling was fairly heavy, so between the load, truck, and trailer I was pushing 75,000 pounds; over 35 tons. My wife was in the passenger seat.

I had just rounded the corner at highway speed when a blur of movement to my left and up ahead caught our attention. Between the north and southbound freeways there is a 30-40 foot wide space. The “blur” was coming straight toward my truck. At first glance it appeared to be flying over the ground. So in that initial half second I thought it was a large piece of black plastic blowing over the road. Then both my wife and I realized it was covered in black fur and on all fours. It wasn’t trying to run across the freeway before I got there. It was “charging” straight at the truck from my 10 o’clock. I was going about 60 and my best guess is it was moving about 35-40 miles per hour.

In that second or two I had to react we both braced for impact because it looked like it was going to hit the driver’s side bumper or my door. They always tell you in trucking school that if an animal runs out in front of you not to swerve or slam on the brakes. Just hit it. Otherwise you could end up dead. Unlike cars, if you wreck a big rig you will most likely be killed because you have tons and tons of weight behind you that will come right through the tractor and pulverize everything inside, including you.

So that’s what I did. I let off the gas, but held tight to the steering wheel and braced myself for this thing to hit the tractor. Luckily it hit the trailer instead. I watched it flash by my side of the truck and below me, from my vantage point about 9 feet up from the ground. We felt a heavy thump behind us on the trailer but nothing that caused me to lose control. I looked in my side mirror. The trailer lights lit up the freeway behind me.

There was a huge black motionless lump right in the middle of the freeway. It was on the lane divider line and easily took up half of each lane on either side of the line.

My wife and I both shouted out a few four letter words. You know, “What the @#&$ was that?! Did you see that?!”

Anyway, gotta wrap this up. There’s more details but it’s getting late and I have to get up early and drive. I’d be interested in talking to you about this.”

Truckers never have it easy! My son, who also drives a big rig, was going north on Hwy 395, just around Chiloquin….he had another truck following him fairly close behind….he was in the north bound lane….he noticed up ahead, about 50 yards (this was in the early a.m.), what appeared to be some type of animal sitting/laying right on the fog line…he slowed, as he was concerned that the, “animal”, might run out into his lane….it didn’t….as he got closer, he could see brown fur/hair…but he could not see details, such as head/legs/arms. He did see that there was some movement of the, “animal”. He said it was enormous….he didn’t want to hit the horn, as he was afraid this would spook the thing into his lane. So, he pulled well into the southbound lane….still no appreciable movement from the animal, other than some small jerky ones. As he got on by…the other truck came up on it as well….the other truck started hollering on the CB…”what the hell was that???!!!???”….my son said he couldn’t really tell…but it sure was big…the other truck agreed, and then wondered if it might have been a buffalo? I’ve checked and the nearest buffalo ranch in the area is probably 40 miles away, as the crow fliles, and I can’t imagine some rancher not noticing his, “cow/buffalo”, missing and getting out to look for it. If it’s yours, and it causes an accident with a car or big rig, I’d suppose it would be the rancher’s insurance that would have to foot the bill. Can’t imagine either, that a cow/buffalo would not at least move off the roadway several feet…(altho, Lord knows cows and buff aren’t the brightest bulbs in the box and cause plenty of accidents), but to just sit there and not move, sure strikes me as odd.

Sure would have been interesting if the trucker who thinks he killed this one, could have stopped and maybe investigated…tho on thinking about that, if the, “animal”, wasn’t dead, it might have been quite upset when it revived, and the trucker might have had himself more of a report than he’d want.

Truckers see more weird stuff out on the roads than most folks ever will.

p.s. sorry this is so long.

Janet B. I remember hearing or reading that report about a trucker who slowed down because he saw on the side of the hiway a Sasquatch creature sitting at the fog line and was afraid it my bolt in front of his rig in the Chiloquin Or.area,I can just say this the way the trucker described how creature seemed to be flying above the ground fits right in and being that it is out of that part of Shasta County fits in as well ,these animals can burn rubber and it really is very hard to even see a Squatch unless it is walking or standing still because if is is at full sprint it is almost faster than the naked eye as seen in this police video, although not from Shasta it gives a prime example of how the creature seem to fly above the ground https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmr-cDD0Hdk

Please please PLEASE convince this guy to let you interview them as a couple!!! One constructive criticism I have is often there are accounts between friends or couples but only one witness is interviewed. I realize it just isn’t possible to get both witnesses due to LIFE GETTING IN THE WAY but please make a big effort to interview them BOTH…..like when you had both K9 cops from southwest TX…..it adds a tremendous amount of credibility to the subject and usually results in more details to add to the sighting as each perspective is slightly different. Can’t wait!!!!!

Great story Wes and I hope he will come on. This squatch seemed retarded. Here we have a busy freeway, with all sizes of vehicles coming and going and the stupid thing picks a fully loaded semi to attack. If he did live, and I hope not, I’ll bet he’s scratchin’ his head saying “what was I thinking”, the next time I’ll pick a Mini Cooper. Ha.

WOW! I’ve been a driver for over 20 years and I can tell you that I was right there in the cab with dude. I closed my eyes and thought about every move a driver would make, what would go through a drivers mind during a situation such as this…Wait, I mean I would read a few lines and then close my eyes….No, that isn’t right either….OK, I didn’t really close my eyes, but I think you know what I mean. But seriously, I have often thought about what if. What if a Sasquatch would run out in front of me while in my big truck? I know what kind of damage a 180 – 220 lb deer makes on the front end of a rig, I couldn’t even imagine what a 400 – 700 lb pissed off Squatch would do. The stuff that keeps me up at night…Great post!

Oh yeah, the only other thing I need to say is that big trucks don’t have a “gas peddle”, we have accelerators, we burn diesel fuel, not gas. Just some friendly trucker ball busting. The driver telling the story will know what I’m talking about. Keep your greasy parts down brother trucker.

I don’t think you can call it a squatch for sure. It happened so fast they really didn’t get a good look at it. It had hair and was running on all 4s and that’s the description. If the driver didn’t stop the truck and go back to look at it then there’s not much more to the story. In this case if someone told him he hit a bear, it’d be hard to argue he didn’t. I don’t think this would make an episode unless there’s a lot more to the story.

This is in response to Janet B’s comment and the posted account. I have heard other encounters of extremely large unidentifiable creatures lying either in the road or on the side of the road presumably hit by a vehicle. I would be afraid to get out of my vehicle to check out the creature especially if it could be a Sasquatch. They are very clever and it seems like the perfect ruse for an easy meal of man meat.

Wow! Great Story – I wonder what the next dude to coma along found? Sasquatch road Kill!

Can you imagine? Now all we need is another caller into Wes with the other half of the story –

“I was heading down route 5 early on my way to work when I came upon a large dead animal in the road blocking my way and…..”

  8. Andrew S

As much as I want to believe this particular incident involved a Sasquatch, from the description, it does not sound like it is out of the realm of possibility for it to be a bear. Too bad the truck driver didn’t pull over to investigate. Also, chances are, if there’s a big dead Bigfoot lying in the middle of the road, someone else might have seen it and photographed it. I think we all need to approach every sighting by eliminating what it could be, before we draw conclusions. Most everyone on this site knows they exist, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still miss-identifications.

This sounds like another excellent ‘encounter’.

There’s a guy on Bigfoot Forums that had a very similar encounter, but these creatures were witting in the road, and he had to stop before they got up and walked off.

He’s one of the moderators on there now.

He’d make a great guest, too.
