Thanks Wes, I was not aware of this great event of selflessnes, and glad the story is being told. Seems trajic events of all kinds brings humans together to benefit all. This was not the first boatlift in New York City. Back in late August of 1776, George Washington’s army suffered a tremendous defeat the day before and he and 10k troops were trapped on the Brooklyn Heights by the East River. They had no chance of defeating General Howes far superior army the next day. Washington devised a plan by setting huge fires during the night, making the British think they were still there, while many rowboats ferryed the solders across the East River to lower Manhattan during the night. However when daylight broke they were still a sizeable amount his army left. Then by what Washington and others thought was a stroke of providence and highly unusual for this area, a heavy fog came in and all the reamaing troops crossed. Had this boatlift not taken place, surely Washington would have lost this battle and his army and probably the Revolutionary War.
