History

The Kickatoo Indians of the region had a local legend involving a, “Bear Man” who rules over all the bears of the region, serving as their king. This creature was dubbed the bear king. A name that local media picked up to describe the nearby entity that was sighted in 1901 by a number of locals. On May 15, 1901, papers across the United States reported on an abduction in Marble Falls, Texas in which a local girl named Ramie Arland was taken captive by the bear king.

As Ramie was out tending to the sheep flock on her families farm one afternoon, members of the household reported to hear Ramie’s screams followed by what they described as the, “roar of a panther.” Gathering weapons and running from their home they found Ramie gone and after searching the woods without clues soon assembled a search party of locals. The group searched the woods all night but was unable to find the missing girl. The next day a local hunter found Ramie wandering the woods aimlessly several miles away. Ramie claimed that she had been grabbed by a bear man who brought her to a cave in the mountains, and struck her any time she tried to escape. Ramie eventually waited for the creature to fall asleep before escaping.

A group of local men began tracking the creature and eventually found its cave where they confronted the beast who growled like a panther and beat his chest. The locals were hesitant to kill it as the creature resembled a human but eventually shot it after it charged at them. No description was made for what they did with its body. Years later a local brewery was named after the, “Bear King.” In memory of the event.

This video has me scratching my head. First, why Bear King? The native people are so tuned in to everything that it seems strange they would call this creature that. Maybe there is more that we are missing, like, it was able to easily kill bears? Also, it seemed to be alone, like a rogue Sasquatch. I would love to investigate this story more by visiting the actual place and speaking to any of the members of this tribe. This is so very interesting and mysterious. I had to laugh at the part where somebody called her out that she was sneaking around with a boy. That is a giant leap of a story for getting caught by your Dad. LOLOL
