Richard Wesley writes “I am so happy after this confrontation with a black bear during our spring hunt. No wounds except a bruised elbow and ego where the bear threw me down. Genuinely happy that this was a non fatal or tragic outcome. Proving that the black bear is a wild and unpredictable animal. Again so happy with the outcome.”

Not a hunter or familiar with laws, but could he have shot the arrow?
Whizbang
Yes he could have shot an arrow. He would have probably been better to stand tall yelling when he first seen bear, bear wasn’t interested in him anyway or he would’ve been lunch. Not sure why he was sneaking up on bear. The bow looked to be about a 65lb recurve. No where near enough to stop a charging bear. Unless you hit something just right. Running would of been worse, can’t out run it. It just wasn’t his time.

Thanks for explaining!

In Ontario, they have re-instated Spring Bear Hunting – if I remember regs correctly it is males only or females with no cubs. So he would have been bow hunting – he may have been in an area where it is bows only. In Ontario, where the season is bows only no firearms allowed for defense and, other than trappers, handguns are restricted and illegal for hunting (and illegal to be carried other than to a gun range).

By the Ontario regulations, 65lbs pull is allowed for big game.

Whiz bang, I agree with you. Looks like a Shafer Recurve!

That was no damn bear!
