At First I Thought It Was A Bear

A listener writes “This happened in August of 1983, but I can remember it like it was yesterday. My husband and I had gone to a wedding out in Washington state and afterward we wanted to see some of that beautiful country.

We left very early one morning and our friends had recommended that we take the Upper Royal Basin trail for great scenery.

We were about 4 miles or so in, when my husband wanted to do some fishing, so I waited for him on a big rock and tried to read my book. Here I have to say that I have hiked and backpacked for years in wilderness areas in the western US where there are some large wild animals. Never have I ever been afraid or uneasy out in the woods. But on this day from the time we started up that trail, I began to get increasingly anxious and uneasy and feeling like something in the woods was watching us. I couldn’t shake the feeling or explain it. I had become almost unbearably uneasy as my husband took off to fish in the river.

As I sat there trying to read, maybe 30 minutes after he’d left I happened to look up. About 100 yards away was something very big in the trees that was covered in reddish fur and at first I thought it was a bear. It stepped out of the woods and I then saw that it was walking on 2 legs, so that was no bear. It moved along the tree line and its head was nearly touching the lowest tree branches which were easily 7.5 to 8 feet or more off the ground. Its whole body was covered in that thick reddish hair or fur, and I only saw it from the side until it turned and disappeared into the forest. At that point I just briefly had a clear view of it from the back.

It never made a sound and thankfully it seemed to not notice me. I was so shocked that I couldn’t move or make any noise. The whole episode lasted maybe 20 seconds. I couldn’t see where my husband was fishing and was afraid to try and run to find him. I saw him coming down the trail about a half hour later. I was so terrified and insisted that we immediately run, not walk back to the car!

These things are real, and I know what I saw.”

Scary encounter! Not that she was threatened, but there was her sixth sense, gut feeling or whatever you want to call it telling her this is not right. Trust that feeling, because the potential of bad things happening seemed to be present. I would love to hear her encounter in more detail.

    Thanks for sharing
