A Strange Night That Caused Us To Leave

A listener writes “This happened in 2007 in a small town in Arkansas. It’s only ten or so miles from mount magazine and multiple other ridges and mountains. A lot of farmers plant soy and corn close to the river because it actually rarely floods.

Anyway off the river there are a couple of little oxbow lakes that me and a couple of friends used to fish. Honestly they were rarely fished due to the snags…and the fact that the edges.of the lakes were very grown up. The lakes further out are also surrounded by these crop fields. Anyway me and my friends had cut through the thick stuff and ended up making a camp on the lakes edge. One night we went out to try our luck. It was mid December, not really sure on the date now but I do know that it was over cast…it was also unseasonably warm. Arkansas does have some weird weather but I was actually in shorts. Anyway we had lit a fire and I was sitting and fishing. My buddy was in the midst of chopping wood for our fire. It was around midnight when we heard this weird howl. I’ve listened to the Mississippi howls and it was alot like those. At the time though I had never heard them and it made the hair on the back stand up. We retreated to the far side of the fire at this point and we began to discuss what we had heard….a couple of minutes later we heard this howl again but this time much closer. It was loud enough it felt like it just reverberated your insides. It freaked us out and I immediately set about grabbing my dog (had brought my cocker spaniel) who was acting abnormal…he was shaking I can remember that…I threw him into the passenger side of my Jeep. I bailed in that side because of my thought process. The sound had come from the other side of my Jeep and with me my imagination runs wild. I wasn’t about to let something try to grab me.

So I bailed in followed by my friend. I threw the jeep I’m reverse and hauled ass out. I never tried to swing my lights that way. I never wanted to really see what it was. I would return the next day around noon. No way in hell I would go back at night. When we returned we found that our food had been taken. We had grilled some burgers. I remember we didn’t grill them all. I can remember tossing the bag that they were in into the tent and zipping it up. That next day our tent had been unzipped and the burger patties were gone.. I eventually went trucking through the brush to find foot prints. I eventually came across an impression in the dirt but it was not very distinctive. It may not have been a track but I felt like it was one. This was the start of a really strange couple of months because after this there was all kinds of strange activity around town. I would rather talk on the phone about the rest of it if your interested.”
