A Knocking In The Woods

A listener writes “I had an experience just this past weekend in Mendocino County, a knocking in the woods that was very close and seemed intentional, not as if something falling. I am curious, what are the main theories as to why Sasquatch would knock? Is it a warning? Are they communicating with others?

I was alone on Manly Gulch Trail, just a few miles from the city of Mendocino. Saw just two people on the trail my entire two hour hike. Coming back I stopped at a point where there was a decent size branch in the middle of the trail that I hadn’t noticed on the way out. I moved it out of the way and walked about 20 feet and thought I heard what sounded like a small rock hitting the ground from where I just was.

Feeling a bit spooked I didn’t check it out but stayed in place to just listen for anything else. After about a minute I heard very clearly 3 firm knocks followed by one softer knock. There was very much a consistent pace of the three subsequent so not like something falling. I started my audio recording on my smartphone just after that. It came from off the trail and seemed about 100 yards or so away.

I picked up a good size branch and hit it against a tree a few times and after one series of knocking I heard a knock immediately after. In my recording you can just hear that one knock. It’s faint because of the distance. Just one strike. Then I heard something moving in that vicinity. It was not a bird or small animal. (My entire hike I heard very little wild life except for one squirrel in a tree and a handful of birds, but no wood peckers). This sounded heavy and lasted a few seconds.

I was in that spot for maybe five more minutes. I hit the tree a few more times but nothing after that.

I’m racking my brain for what could have caused that sound. Had I not been hiking alone I would have ventured off trail a bit to investigate.”
