A listener writes “My mother and I live in Park County Colorado near Kenosha Pass. We have hiked this trail my entire life and on 08/22/2018 my mother and I headed out for a small hike as she had knee surgery and this would be our only hike of the summer.
We weren’t planning to go far and we brought a small back pack with us that contained a few snacks, bear mace, and an air horn to deter any animals we might run into on the trail. I was born and raised in Park County and my mother and I have had an encounter with about every kind animal in Colorado until this hike. The day started off strange as I had a snake run across my shoe on the trail when we began our hike, this is highly unusual as snakes are not common at our altitude.
When we reached the mid point of our hike at tree line, we sat down and rested for a moment before heading back to the car which was about an hour away. This was when we heard a noise that sounded like a tree knock, we have never heard anything like this so my mom and I jokingly decided to answer the knock by clapping two rocks together. We didn’t hear an answer back so we just laughed it off and headed back down the trail. When we started heading back we noticed that there were several shot gun shells strewn all over the trail which we hadn’t noticed on our way up the trail.
We were completely alone on the trail and there was no possible way that another hiker could have caught up to us so quickly. At the point where we noticed the shotgun shells, we were hit with a rancid smell that can only be compared with garbage and skunk.
This is when we saw a huge rock being hurled at a tree we were passing by, my mother was closest to the tree the rock struck and she looked to see where it came from or who threw it. This is when she saw a strange creature that stood approximately 9ft tall and was standing just beyond the trail in a heavily wooded area. She told me that it was a dark cherry color and it was just watching us. I walked ahead out of fear of what had thrown the rock at us and I had to physically grab my mother to walk with me as she was frozen in place after making eye contact with the mysterious creature.
When I got her to start walking I went ahead of her and I was almost struck by another rock from behind me. I turned around to see if this was my mom pulling a prank on me, however, this was when a third rock passed right in front of my face almost striking me. The rocks were being thrown so violently that had one of them hit us, we would have been severely injured. As we were being assailed by the rocks, my mother quickly grabbed the air horn I had placed on the outside of our backpack and discharged it three times, this is a distress signal and we were hoping, futility, that someone might hear us. Fortunately, the noise was loud enough for the rocks to momentarily stop and we started to make our way out of the danger. This was such a precarious position as my mother was not able to move very fast due to her knee surgery over the summer.
As we were making our way down the trail, the rock throwing resumed and it would increase when we remained quiet for too long. We tried to keep our voices loud to keep the rocks at bay and by the time we reach the end of the trail the rock throwing had stopped. When we were in sight of our car, and the only car in the area, we both heard a very loud and strange “call” that I have only ever hear at the ape enclosure at the zoo.”
