A listener writes ” After listening to your podcast yesterday morning, I thought I would pen my encounter that I had many years ago. My twin sister (we’re dittos) asked me to send on to you. Below is really all that I can recall. It is interesting that my grandmother died not too long after this incident, but the sighting was so burned into my psyche that this is the only memory I have of interacting with my grandmother, which I think is a good thing. I would be happy to talk with you. BF was definitely in Kansas in the 1950s!
I’m a 66 YO retired nurse living in Wichita, KS. My encounter happened in 1959 or 60 when I was approximately 5 years old. We lived on the northwest side of Wichita in a fairly new extension of the city. My grandmother, who was from Texas, was visiting. She was quite the seamstress. She was sitting on the couch in our living room hand-sewing a pinafore and bloomers for my “Debbie doll” and I was so excited and being a silly 5-year old twirling around the living room and ended up going behind the drapes, which covered a large window on the front of our house. It was dark outside and I cupped my hands to my face, pressed my face against the window and my world was changed due to what I saw. There was a gorilla peering back at me just a few feet away! Now from that point on the evening became very fuzzy. My mother, who is deceased, had told me that I came out from behind the drapes, no longer being silly, and she said “you were as white as a sheet.” When I told them what I saw their response was, “Maybe a monkey escaped from the zoo.”
This experience has never been far from the forefront my mind. I have thought about it often still perplexed about what I saw. The face I saw had dark hair, leathery/wrinkly dark skin with a wide nose and golden eyes. That is all I saw before getting out from behind the drapes. The whole incident lasted at most 2 to 3 seconds. I don’t remember anything after that.
The Wichita Riverside Park Zoo did not have gorillas. I believe at that time they did have a few monkeys. It was a very small zoo located in the center of town.
One day, within the last couple of months, my twin sister said to me that she believed what I saw was a bigfoot that night a long time ago. She said she has been listening to Sasquatch Chronicles and that looking in windows is a behavior they exhibit. I had heard that as I have always been interested in the subject but just never related that information to my incident. We started rehashing the incident and figured the creature had to be at least 6 ft to 7 ft tall.
I remember having a few nightmares from the incident but what I never did, for a very long time, was look out a window of my residence at night. I was only comfortable with all window coverings being drawn at night.”
