Encountered something

A listener writes “I live in Southeast Missouri, but this encounter happened in western Kentucky on August 16, 2016. A friend and I were riding four-wheelers on a property that was unfamiliar to us.

We entered a trail leading into the woods and traveled about 100 yards before the trail split. I was leading, so I stopped at the split, thinking it would be a good place to figure out which way we wanted to go.

My friend stopped beside me on my left. We both got off our four-wheelers and stood there talking for a while. I remember leaning against the front rack of my four-wheeler. We were there for probably 30 minutes.

By the time we decided it was time to leave, it was getting dark in the woods. There was still just a little twilight, but the woods themselves were already very dark.

We both got back on our four-wheelers at the same time. I remember reaching for my key when, all of a sudden BAM!

Something hit the front of my four-wheeler.

I felt dirt pepper my face, and for a moment it was almost like I was in a daze. When I came to, I looked over at my friend. He was completely frozen in place, with his butt about a foot off the seat. He had an expression of absolute terror on his face.

I said, “What did you do?”

At first, I thought he had somehow caused whatever had just happened. But the look on his face immediately sent me into a panic. I think I knew instantly that something was seriously wrong, although I kept thinking, I’m going to figure this out any second.

The fear I felt was unlike anything I had ever experienced.

About that time, it seemed as though I pictured a large sign in my mind that said:

“DO NOT COME THIS WAY ANY FURTHER.”

After researching experiences like this later, I came across the term “mindspeak,” which seemed to describe what I experienced.

The next thing I knew, my friend had started his four-wheeler, spun around, and was taking off. I started mine as well, but I immediately put it in reverse and backed away from the area.

As I backed up, my headlights illuminated a huge chunk of wood lying on the trail. It was approximately 3–4 feet long and 10–12 inches in diameter just a large piece of wood you might expect to find in the woods.

But this piece of wood had not been there earlier.

We had been standing directly in front of my four-wheeler for about 30 minutes. I had been leaning against the front rack. There was no piece of wood there when we stopped. I know that because I would have seen it.

What really bothered me was the force with which it had apparently struck the four-wheeler. There is no man I know who could throw a piece of wood that large and hit me that hard unless he were standing extremely close probably within five feet.

And it didn’t come from the treetops.

It was August, and the trees were covered in leaves. If something that large had fallen out of the trees, I would have expected to see or hear it coming through the branches. Instead, it seemed to have come straight down the trail toward us.

I’ve been a hunter all my life, and I’m completely comfortable in the woods. I’m not someone who is normally afraid of being out there.

A couple of days later, I decided I needed to go back and see what I could figure out. I armed myself with an AR and a .40-caliber handgun. I parked along the road and quietly walked back toward the location.

The woods leading up to that spot had very little undergrowth. But in two different places, where saplings were growing close to the trail, I noticed something strange. Some of the saplings had been twisted and pulled over the trail. They were about 2–3 inches in diameter and appeared to have been twisted near the bottom.

At that point, I started getting a very creepy feeling.

I continued to the spot where the incident had happened, but the large piece of wood was gone.

I decided that was enough, and I left.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods throughout my life, and I still don’t know what happened that night. I only know what I experienced, what I saw, and how intense the fear was.

Thanks for taking the time to hear my encounter.”
