A listener from Maine writes “Hey Wes , I’ve been debating about sending this email for years now but I figure maybe there are others like me that didn’t know these things are in the Northeast and this information could help them .
Short synopsis:
It was 2020 and I was going stir crazy from being in lockdown so when a friend asked me to go do the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine I jumped at the opportunity. The 100 MW is a place along the Appalachian Trail where you don’t cross a paved road for 99.8 miles.
I have to head to work so I’ll just offer the high points. On day 8 on trail I came across a gigantic tree structure, I’m talking huge . It consisted of multiple living rooted trees that were woven together and being held in place by another tree that had it’s roots still attached but was pulled out of the ground with the rootball pointing skyward. No person could have made this without equipment, yet there were no signs of rope or cable marked on the trees and the ground wasn’t overly disturbed. I looked it over for a while then I got an odd feeling like I wasn’t supposed to be there so I continued on my way .
I pulled into my expected camp spot for the night , set up and made dinner. While eating I listened to a huge pack of coyotes yipping excitedly sounding like they just made a kill . While i enjoying the nature sounds this otherworldly “thing” started sounding off. Wes this this was completely massive and no more than 100 yards from my tent .
I have no words to describe the intensity of this sound, except gigantic. It lasted for a full 15-20 seconds and the mass of air that was moved was so impressive that it couldn’t be anything I was familiar with . After it called the first time , another one answered it from a ways off , then the close one called again, far one called again… then silence. That was the scariest part! Then I heard something big walk somewhat through my camp , it stopped and pushed over a freaking living tree ! I’m talking a full grown living tree 40 yards from my tent , then nothing else the rest of the night.
There are other details that I’ve come to realize might have been associated with this same creature but they aren’t as exciting as the vocalization.

Most curious on the size of the tree that was uprooted, and also the one pushed over.

When the woods are not what you think and then some. No wonder there are scary stories of things that go bump in the night.
