Pennsylvania Monkeys

A listener writes “I hope all is well and that 2019 has started in a positive direction for you! Just wanted to share a story with you that happened in 98′.

I decided to tell you about it after hearing Timothy Renner on your show. He mentioned a location in Adams County, Pennsylvania that was very close to where I had my experience. Well, here’s the story. My wife at the time and my 2 year old daughter were headed to Pennsylvania to spend the weekend with a close friend and her parents who lived a few minutes east of Chambersburg, PA. Their house was a log cabin style house that was part of a small community of similar homes. It was just off of route 30 at Caledonia State Park.

The house accommodations were limited so we had planned to camp on their property for the weekend. Plus, we didn’t want to impose for our brief weekend stay and liked the thought of roughing it. Looking back, we we were very close to knocking on their door at or around 1am on that Friday evening, very much in favor of imposing! As I remember, the time of year was warm. Sorry, I don’t recall if it was spring or fall. What I remember about that evening is that we had been inside, had some dinner, as well as a few lite beers. As for the lite beers, we might as well been drinking water. So, we were not drunk, not even a possibility. We retired to the tent in pretty good shape sometime after 11pm. We went to sleep with our daughter between both of us. We slept on a couple of comforters and covered ourselves with the probably two more. Needless to say, my ex-wife and I woke to what sounded like a pack of monkeys in the nearby woods within a few hundred feet. At the time, we had not spent a lot of time camping but new what fox and other creatures of the east coast sound like. This was monkeys! I remember both of us looking at each other whispering what the #@#% is that. Wes, we were in flight mode.

There was no fight as I did not have weapon one. We just lay there on our stomachs, raised on our elbows. on the verge of hauling ass to their front porch prepared to knock the door down. That was last resort of course but I was close and so was she. After a few minutes we realized the sound was not getting closer and went back to sleep. The next day I told my friends step dad what we had experienced and he replied, “those were just fox you heard”. I think I replied, Oh, those Pennsylvania fox sure do sound like monkeys. Nothing to report after that. We spent our Saturday playing golf at the nearby golf course and went back to Delaware on Sunday. I do not recall anything happening Saturday evening.”
