Sasquatch Chronicles

The Paulding Light

I talked about seeing lights a couple of shows back. The main reason I shared my experience with everyone even though it was not Sasquatch related was to let others know that when you are out looking for these creatures you might run into other “things” and to be aware. The lesson I learned is not to chase the lights because they might chase you back. I have never heard of the Paulding Light in Paulding, Michigan. A listener sent me his encounter and it made me think of my own encounter as we drove trying to get away the lights gave chase.

A listener writes “The first report took place in the summer of 2008 in the forest of the upper peninsula of Michigan. I was driving with three other friends to the paulding light. This light appears every night, 365 days a year for all to see. The Paulding Light has always been regarded by fellow “yoopers” as a natural phenomenon or a supernatural entity. At the time not many of us didn’t care to which it could be, until that night. The village of Paulding is sleepy little town in central U.P. and is far away from the middle of nowhere. My friends, Jared, Brody, and Stephanie all were excited to see the light for the first time. I myself have seen it twice before. As we pulled of the highway to the dirt road we approached a narrow clearing made for old train tracks that now have been torn up. There remains unused power lines that are not connected to any known power source and power poles only remain, ruling out electromagnetic disruption of our neural activities. Also, the Native American tribes have had this light in their culture for centuries. We drove to a series of guardrails preventing people from driving further on. While to the left is a sign made claiming the light is the ghost of an old rail road engineer. Two other groups were there waiting to see the light. Night soon approached and we waited by the car for the light to appear. At the end of the clearing at the crest of a hill the light exploded into our retina’s.

It was brighter that night than I have ever seen. It danced through the darkness growing and shrinking in size, Changing from color to color, reds, greens, blues, oranges. I assured everyone that it was harmless and nothing would happen. We waited for the other groups to leave nearly two hrs. later. I continued to stand by the car while Brody and Stephanie sat in the back seats.

All was fine until I noticed there weren’t any insect life or animal life all day in the area. I shrugged it off and soon after began to here low frequency moans from my right and left side. They were without doubt coming from no more then 30 feet away. I asked Jared did he hear that, frighteningly he replied “YES” without doubt in either our minds something was out and we were flashlightless. Our best bet was to throw a stick or two and see if anything responded. After a few sticks and a few minutes we heard the disconcerting moan again.

Not two minutes after the light went from a vibrant color to white to dimly nothing leaving the darkness swell our around us we both noticed orange colored eyes, at least 20 of them to stare at us. Jared and I turned white as ghost looked at each other and decided to run for it. We jumped in the car through it in gear and sped off.  Right away Jared said “Go Faster, Now” I stared into the rearview mirror to see the light chasing us out of forest, It was right on top of us as I was pushing the better part of a hundred mph. We hit the Highway and sped off in shock and awe.

Eight years later I know lived in Middle Tennessee,  My friend which I will call Fred for his animity, were in his dads cabin playing music after a day of turkey hunting. I walked outside to smoke a cigarette and about halfway through heard a low rumbling moan again. My hairs stood up and my nervous system reacted before my mind could comprehend what the sound was. Than a seconds later were 4 loud shrieking screams so loud it reverberated my whole body.  Even Fred could hear them echo through the closed cabin. What ever this creature was it made no sound on a dry leafy woods floor and as we shone a flashlight was not to been seen.  Yet the air mass needed for the lungs to make those noises must have an elephants lung span. To this day I have not disclosed these stories to any public source. After listening to nearly every episode of your show. I’m convince you are sincere in your approached to people and their encounters. I’d be honored to share my accounts to you and your audience if possible,  Thank You.”

The Paulding Light
The Paulding Light (also called the Lights of Paulding or the Dog Meadow Light) is a light that appears in a valley that lies outside of Paulding, Michigan. Reports of the light have appeared since the 1960s, with popular folklore providing such explanations as ghosts, geologic activity, or swamp gas. In 2010, Syfy Channel’s Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files conducted a paranormal investigation and concluded that the Paulding Light was unexplained.

Folklore
The first recorded sighting of the Paulding Light was in 1966 when a group of teenagers reported the light to a local sheriff. Since then, a number of other individuals have reported seeing the mysterious light that is said to appear nearly every night at the site.

Although stories related to the light vary, the most popular legend involves the death of a railroad brakeman. The legend states that the valley once contained railroad tracks and the light is the lantern of the brakeman who was killed while attempting to stop an oncoming train from colliding with railway cars stopped on the tracks. Another story claims the light is the ghost of a slain mail courier, while another says that it is the ghost of an Indian dancing on the power lines that run through the valley
