The Bermuda Triangle gained widespread attention in the mid-20th century after reports of unexplained disappearances. Bruce Gernon is an American pilot best known for claiming that he experienced a highly unusual flight through the Bermuda Triangle on December 4, 1970. His account is one of the most famous survivor stories associated with the Bermuda Triangle.
Gernon was flying a Beechcraft Bonanza A36 from Andros Island to Palm Beach with his father and a business associate.
About 30 minutes into the flight, he encountered a small cloud that rapidly grew into a U-shaped tunnel of clouds. He flew into the tunnel because turning around was difficult.
Inside, he reported:
Thick white fog surrounding the aircraft.
Flashes of light.
Navigation instruments behaving erratically.
Compass malfunctions.
He said the tunnel seemed to rotate around the aircraft before he suddenly emerged into clear skies. The most unusual part of Gernon’s story is his claim that: The flight should have taken about 75 minutes. Instead, he reached the Florida coast in about 47 minutes.
He estimated he had somehow “jumped” roughly 100 miles farther than expected in a much shorter time.
