A listener writes “I encountered something when I was 8 years old. I would like to tell you about it. I and my brother lived with my grandfather and grandmother in the Missouri Ozarks. My grandfather raised cows and worked doing everything he could to stay on the land. I’m 62 years old and this was sometime in 1966-67.
In those days land could be obtained by paying 2 years back county taxes, because there wasn’t any jobs much less well paying jobs. My brother and I roamed all through the woods finding abandoned cabins and farmsteads even coming upon an old man making corn liquor. Grandfather knew who it was and told us to stay away from him, we had told him about the old man cooking with a funny stove. Grandfather always asked us what we had seen and I remember him commenting on the distance, once 5 miles, we traveled he was pleased. The woods seemed endless and we were never lost. Natural homing abilities I guess. And we knew all the animals. Grandfather had a good running creek, we called the branch. We played and swam there, the water was deep and cold and full of fish. One morning I was by myself and walking back to the house from the branch.
At a corner of a pasture where the county road went up to a cemetery I saw something standing behind a bush looking at me. I could not recognize what it was and all the animals in the forest would run from you as soon as they spotted you. And here was this animal standing there looking at me. It was 2.5 to 3 foot tall with black hair except its face which was white, I don’t remember hair on its face, I could not see it’s hands behind the bush. Because it hadn’t ran away I yelled and waved my arms it just stood there looking at me. So I picked up a couple of rocks and threw them at it. I will never forget the way it looked at me so human and hurt. I stood there wondering what it was then reached down for more rocks. When I stood up it was gone.
I climbed the fence and went to where it had been, looking for a hole. I thought it had jumped down, there wasn’t one. I looked around the pasture the grass was short it had been grazed. The creature didn’t make any noise jumping the fence or crossing the road it was just gone. I didn’t worry about it I didn’t know what it was and the first time I saw a Curious George book I was reminded of it, but the way it looked at me with humanity and sadness after I threw the rocks I’ll never forget. I think it had been watching us kids play and wanted to play too.
I’ve had a couple more encounters and lived on a ranch in West Texas. One pasture I always felt watched and one evening saw orbs. I thought it was a lantern the glow was shining off of mesquite and juniper trees. I could see the light out a picture window, I thought someone was trespassing near a old house. I drove to the lights on the ranch half mile away when I got close they disappeared. Occasionally I would awaken to the sound of children laughing. The ranch was fairly remote and this puzzled me. One morning I had just woke and I saw something huge like a buffalo, run into the trees, it’s head looked like a Indian I’ve never seen anything run like that either. My oldest son thinks it was a SK–n walker. My youngest son saw things that he couldn’t explain.
I sold the ranch 4 years ago I was not aware of the orbs phenomenon until I listened to your program. Later, I was driving (trucking) between Haskell and Abilene and saw something standing in a pasture. I looked because it was looking at me and I thought what in the world is this guy doing standing there in a gille suit, hunting season is over. I got a good look and after awhile it occurred to me ‘damn that dude was tall a least 7′ and skinny too’ I couldn’t see a rifle. Texas has a lot of country no one lives in. Well I wanted to share these with you I have had a couple of other experiences and have some thoughts on why a person might have more than one. I enjoy your program.”
