Laughing in the Woods

A listener writes “I was on patrol one night when I engaged a young man in a traffic stop. The stop location wasn’t favorable as it was in a valley between two hills. As I made my initial contact I had a very unsettling feeling.

I introduced myself and explained the reason for the stop. I returned to my cruiser and wrote out the citation. I walked back up to the vehicle and got to talking to the driver. He explained that he was interested in becoming a cop and was asking about what I thought. To may back approximately 100 yards behind me we heard a laughing or cackling and the driver’s face turned pale and my unsettling feeling became an urgent need to get out of there. I sprinted back to my cruiser and jumped in and drove a mile up to the next intersection. The driver had turned around and pulled in behind my cruiser.

He told me he wanted to make sure I was safe and he stood there as I finished my paperwork. He explained that he was ex military and had done three tours of Iraq and never had he had that feeling of fear that he did when he heard those sounds. That sound stuck with me and listening to your podcast it brought chills all over my body when I listened to the recording from the machine shed cause that was the sound but the ones we heard were higher pitched.”
