I live in northern Trumbull County Ohio, approximately 70 minutes north of where the Ohio Howls was recorded.
In May of 2023, I was in my back yard, just before dark, and I was cooking over an open fire. I only have about 6 acres, but there are no homes behind me and the neighbors on either side of me are far away, and for the most part, they are out of sight. Each block, in our area, is approximately 6 miles. Therefore in my back yard, there are thick woods that continue for a mile and a half before coming to the next small road, and then another mile and a half before the next road, and so on. Even though I am only 35 minutes south of Youngstown, we are pretty remote.
I often sit out back by the fire as often as I can. I have a decent size farm pond and the night sounds are like music to me. Along with nature sounds, almost every time I’m out there, I really enjoy listening to your show. It fits perfectly with the atmosphere. On this particular evening, I was listening to your show, and the sun was just beginning to go down. I heard a sound that originated from the south and a few degrees to the west. I could tell that it was far off, yet it was loud, if that makes any sense. I listened for a while before it occurred to me that I should try and record it. I did manage to get a little of the sound recorded, but it didn’t come out as well as I hoped. The recording did sound as though the sound was far off, but it didn’t capture the intensity of what I heard. The reason I recorded it was because I have lived in this home since the 70’s and I’ve never heard this sound before. I’ve played it for friends and family, but no one has been able to identify it.
