“Hey Wes, My name is Dylan. My friend who was with me is also named Dylan. I was enlisted in the marines so I would always go condition myself at high elevation in the mountains getting ready for the marines. At the time my other friend Dylan would come with. I had him go to a surplus store and buy gear. I was the only one packing heat, 45acp Springfield 1911.
We had pulled over the side of the highway going from Loveland CO, to Estes park CO. The mountain was about at least a 2 mile hike up. And we were carrying a ton of stuff. So we finally made it to the top and sat down to look at the view. Dylan than climbed on top of the boulders and his face turned white like he saw a ghost. He started running and I yelled “hey wtf what is it” and he stopped and told me there’s a huge black bear on the other side of the boulder.
So i wanted to see for myself and pulled out the pistol and slowly walked around. And there he was probably as big as me which im 5″10 and 160lbs. he was probably 300-350 lbs. I told Dylan that lets leave slowly so he doesn’t see us and of course he heard me and the bear started not really fast coming toward me. I yelled at it and it still kept coming so i fired into the ground and that sure made him high tail out of there.
Maybe one minute later my hair stood up and I had an uneasy feeling so i said lets start depending out of here. And we are quite a ways up on a real steep mountain with it getting dark. The first steep down is very steep so I grabbed Dylan by his backpack and helped him slowly down. At that moment i heard what sounded like a huge baseball fly literately a half inch from Dylan head. And this rock was the size of a high school football. It hit the pine tree and almost knocked off all the pine.
I’ve never felt that type of primal fear before in my life and I’ve been shot at several times. I heard what sounded like a f**** dinosaur run on the cliff right above us and let out a yell that sounded like a 500lbs demon possessed woman on her period. I felt it hit my temple. I than looked at Dylan and I snapped out of being paralyzed and felt as if I were backed into a corner, flight or fight to say the least.
I than pulled out my pistol told Dylan to run and busted the whole clip in the direction of the noise. Than we both lone survivor style down this mountain turning back once and seeing what looked like a face above this tree. It was 200yrds at least so I didn’t get a very good look but we fell and banged ourselves up pretty bad and I got a torn ankle. We didn’t say any words that didn’t have a cuss word in it the few times we talked on the way home.
We were both in tears when we first got down the mountain. We went down two miles in around 20 mins and that type of terrain is very rugged probably some of the most harshest in the U.S.. I didn’t tell the doc what happen, I just got my pain med and went home. The only person I’ve even told is Dylans mom and my wife. I don’t think bears throw rocks or scream like that. It really made me think twice about what people think they know, look toward to talking to ya.”
