A listener writes “I have a degree in forestry. I have been working 50 hours a week in the woods for about ten years now. I’ve been in some of the most remote areas of the PNW, from Montana to Washington.
I once had a 4 foot log thrown uphill at me while eating lunch. A camping situation when something ran threw my camp site. It wasn’t a bear or a moose. I actually ended up shooting my pistol out the tent door into the air to try and scare it away. My dogs who always bark and growl at anything new were silent and right next to my wife like they were protecting her. I may have seen this thing once across a creek drainage but it was too far and too dark to be sure. It was up on two legs which I know bear can do. We have a lot of black bear hear as well as the occasional grizzly.
Ive seen a ton of bears in my line of work. Worked right next to them actually. Walked up on a mama and cubs. Been charged multiple times. This was different. Bears tend to stand on two legs to smell ya. When it runs away it will drop to all 4s. This thing took 5-6 steps before dropping to all 4s. Also the arms of a bear do not swing back past there body most of the time. This things arms swung like a humans. I only saw it for about 8-10 seconds before it disappeared in the timber but in my opinion that thing was not a bear. In my years as a forester I’ve learned there are two different camps. People who know they are out there and people to try and make fun of those people who know. Some of my coworkers who I consider good friends will not even entertain the notion that these things may exist. Its frustrating” sometimes.
