Deep in the forests of rural Manitoba, long before Bigfoot became a pop culture icon, a teenager had an experience that would stay with him for the rest of his life. This is the story of Archie Motkaluk.
It was the summer of 1960 near the small community of Renwer, Manitoba. Like many teenagers growing up in the area, Archie was comfortable in the wilderness. The forests weren’t something to fear they were familiar, almost like an extension of home.

On that day, he was out walking alone. The air was still. Archie suddenly became aware that something was nearby. When he looked up, he saw it standing shockingly close, only about eight feet away. Not a bear. Not a man.
Something else.
He later described the figure as:
Tall and powerfully built
Covered in dark hair
Human like in shape, but not human
What struck him most wasn’t just its appearance it was the presence. The intelligence in its eyes. The awareness. He believed it was female. For a brief moment, neither moved. Archie stood there, frozen between disbelief and instinct. The creature didn’t charge or flee it simply watched him. Observed. Eventually, instinct took over.
Archie backed away and then ran. He didn’t look back.
In environments like the Manitoba wilderness, you learn quickly that hesitation can be dangerous even if you don’t fully understand what you’re facing.
