A listener writes “It was August, 2 years ago. I was camping in the Beartooth wilderness in Montana, with a group of my dads High School buddies. It was around 7:46 at night, so just when the sun was setting on the campground we were in.
There was a meadow area in the campground, surrounded by pretty thick woods. It was dark, dusky-like in the trees, but a good amount of light in the meadow. We were at a campfire, which was on the edge of the woods. We were all sitting around, having a jolly good time , but while one guy was talking, we heard several hooting noises.
They were deep, definitely not an owl, and we heard heavy breathing. Now, we were in Montana. We aren’t stupid. We assumed it was a bear. We stood with our backs to the fire, and raised our arms over our heads and hollered. We also got out our bear spray. The howling stopped, but the grunting continued, but it sounded like it was getting further away.
From the corner of his eye, the guy on the opposite side said he saw a large, ape-like creature running/crawling/shuffling away. As we were hiking away 3 days later, we heard more hooting, which followed us for about .5 miles, until several guys let off some shots from some pistols.
